Play Book

Exact Technical Specifications of the Blackberry Play Book Deals

We all love technology; we love it even more when it gets wrapped in a small case, still equipped with anything and everything. One such excellent technology ‘on the go’ device is the first tablet device from the house of Research in Motion (RIM), the blackberry play book.

Research in Motion is committed to technology in one of the most amazing ways. A detailed technical specification based listing with weight on the key highlights is mentioned as below.

Excellent Portability Aspects There is one dilemma about portable technology. On one side we want a device which is as small as possible so that we could accommodate in our trousers’ pockets and on the other hand we want the screen, the button and other aspects to be as big as our laptop. So the answer is the word – balance, as in the best spurts on technology on a medium sized device (not to small, not too big).

The playbook comes with 7″ LCD screen and a 1024 x 600 touch screen resolution. Its weight is even less than a pound (approximately 400 grams) and the product is ultra thin as well.

Measurements: 130mm x 193mm x 10mm (5.1″x7.6″x0.4″)

Symmetric Multiprocessing: This is made possible with the all new blackberry playbook operating software.

RAM Capacity: Blackberry playbook contracts deals offer 1 GHz dual Cortex A9 Processor (core processor series) along with a 1 GB RAM capacity.

Camera and Video Recording: The tablet from blackberry supports excellent video calling facility with its 2 cameras projecting high definition pictures and videos. The combination supports 1080p HD video recording as well.

• Front Camera: 3 MP

• Rear Camera: 5 MP
• Video Output: HDMI
• Video Playback: H.264, MPEG, DivX, WMV apart from the standard 1080p HD Video
• Audio playback: MP3, AAC and WMA

Memory Capacity: The playbook series comes with 3 versions in terms of memory, 64 GB, 32GB and 16 GB. Also, it comes with a 5300mAh battery.

Application Platforms Support for: WebKit/HTML-5, Adobe Mobile AIR, Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, OpenGL, Java and POSIX.

Bluetooth Compatibility: As it is a device which works in Wi-Fi technology, Bluetooth forms a very important link. Bluetooth version is 2.1 (+ EDR).

Wi-Fi Support: A discussion about Wi-Fi and its effective utilization just cannot complete without the mention of this blackberry tablet device. In terms of connection, BlackBerry PlayBook Deals come as a Wi-Fi only device. Wi-Fi Support is 802.11 a/b/g/n

The overall handling is easy like all blackberry devices, and the syncing is convenient as well. When all is said and done, the blackberry play book actually allows you to play and that too on the move.

 55 Cadillac

55 Cadillac

$16.99

Andrew W.K. has done a lot of unusual things in his career — not everyone can have a Cartoon Network show and be a member of Current 93 (not to mention run a club, release an album of J-pop covers, and publish a book of advice) at the same time. Still, 55 Cadillac may be one of the most unique additions to his body of work: it’s a collection of “spontaneous solo piano improvisations” — or “SSPIs” as W.K. calls them — inspired by his car. It’s also, like most of his projects, kind of ridiculous and kind of amazing. He’s completely committed to the concept, and he has the skills to pull it off. After all, W.K. is a classically trained pianist who began taking lessons at age four, and his keyboard chops added fizz to I Get Wet and Close Calls with Brick Walls and majestic heft to The Wolf. That prowess is the focus of this album; on his Steinway & Son Model D concert grand piano, Andrew W.K. weaves classical, jazz, rock, and experimental elements together with an accomplished ebb and flow from piece to piece and within each track. The fantastically named “Begin the Engine” (why merely start an engine when you can begin it?) is overtly classical-influenced, kicking off with the sound of crickets and a motor roaring to life before W.K.’s dazzling arpeggios and otherwise deft playing take over for nearly nine minutes. Shorter tracks like “Seeing the Car,” which tosses hints of ’50s-style rock into the mix, and the lunging, jazzy “Central Park Cruiser” are more immediate and nearly as impressive. Only a couple of moments on 55 Cadillac sound anything like Andrew W.K.’s previous albums: “Night Driver” ranges from atonal boogie-woogie to W.K. tapping on the piano’s edge (which might be the piano equivalent of a drum solo) and has an anthemic quality that’s fully realized by “Cadillac,” which boasts drums and laser-guided guitars that bring the album to a satisfyingly over the top close. Fans of his louder music might not play this often, but 55 Cadillac i…

A Catered Affair [Original Broadway Cast Recording]

A Catered Affair [Original Broadway Cast Recording]

$19.98

A Catered Affair began life as a TV play written by Paddy Chayefsky in his kitchen-sink drama style, telling the story of a Bronx taxi driver’s wife who wants to stage a big wedding for her daughter that the family can’t really afford. Gore Vidal wrote the screenplay for a 1956 movie version starring Bette Davis, and Harvey Fierstein has scripted the musical adaptation with songs by John Bucchino. Fierstein, the author of several gay-oriented stage works (notably the book for La Cage aux Folles) and an accomplished Broadway actor (he played the mother in Hairspray), has gone even deeper into realism than Chayefsky or Vidal dared in the ’50s, turning the live-in brother of the wife, a “confirmed bachelor,” into the closeted gay man he could not be on TV or in the movies 50 years earlier. Fierstein also plays the part himself, singing in his gruff bass voice. The brother, Winston, is put out because, at least initially, he is not to be invited to the wedding, and he takes his revenge in “Immediate Family,” the show’s wittiest song and one that perks the score up considerably. Bucchino, in keeping with the small scale of the work, uses a chamber orchestra of only nine musicians and creates modest musical settings in which the various characters get to express their feelings. His lyrics have a touch of Stephen Sondheim in their frankness, but not much sparkle. In the ? 50s, the wonder of the kitchen-sink style was that it seemed to be elevating the lives of ordinary people into the realm of serious drama. A musical further heightens the experiences of these housewives and working people, but also exposes their dreariness. Despite the best efforts of Fierstein, Faith Prince as the wife, and Tom Wopat as the husband, A Catered Affair as a musical doesn’t really take off. Its flaws are somewhat hidden on the cast album, however, since the problem of its small scale in a Broadway house doesn’t come in. The show probably didn’t belong on Broadway (where it didn’t sta…

A Living Legacy - Historic Stringed Instruments at the Juilliard School

A Living Legacy – Historic Stringed Instruments at the Juilliard School

$75

Created on the occasion of the Juilliard School’s 100th anniversary in 2005, this book offers an unprecedented look at Juilliard’s historic stringed instrument collection. The collection, assembled over the course of the last century through generous gifts of instruments and funds to the school, is vividly represented by photographic and narrative accounts of 25 instruments (and three bows) of particular historic interest by such illustrious makers as Amati, Bergonzi, Guadagnini, Guarneri, Stradivari, and others, as well as reproductions of historic documents and an annotated list of other instruments and bows. Among the featured instruments are a Stradivarius violin that once belonged to a Russian czar and was later owned by Avery Fisher, a Guarneri del Gesù violin played by a member of the Viennese quartet that premiered many of Beethoven’s and Schubert’s works in that genre, and a Stradivarius cello previously owned by Hugo Becker, head of the Berlin Hochschule für Musik.Short essays sketch the history of Juilliard and its illustrious string department, and describe the crucial role of the Instrumental Loan Program, which allows students to borrow instruments for special performances and competitions as well as for longer-term use. The book includes a foreword by renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman, a Juilliard alumnus and holder of the school’s Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Chair since 1999.

 A Piano: The Collection

A Piano: The Collection

$80.98

A Piano: The Collection is a mammoth undertaking by Tori Amos and Rhino Records. This box set collects album cuts, B-sides, unedited and alternate versions, demos, and seven previously unissued cuts. Making one’s way through it is to enter a labyrinth, a parallel but alternate universe that traces the development of the artist from her earliest recordings (with the exception of Y Kant Tori Read, of course) through her transformation as a conceptual songwriter, musician, and artisan who has moved tumultuously through the pop world without, it appears, ever losing her vision or sense of herself. Amos produced this set, and Rhino cross-licensed material from Epic as well. Amos annotates each track here in the handsome hardbound book that accompanies it, which also contains a boatload of photos and an essay by Lorraine Ali. The set comes packaged under a large plastic piano keyboard — this aspect of it is simply irritating. The “piano as part of the package” has been done before — and done better — in other artists’ retrospectives. It’s cheesy. The five discs here, however, cover virtually every part of Amos’ iconic, often iconoclastic career. Virtually every part of Little Earthquakes is explored, which is why disc one is titled “Little Earthquakes Extended” (since basically three versions of the album were completed). These include the singles, such as the unedited 45 version of “Crucify,” the alternate mix of “Flying Dutchman,” and an alternate mix of “Mother.” Even the unissued “Take Me With You” from the Little Earthquakes session is here, but it appears on disc two. With all the B-sides and alternates issued, Little Earthquakes is , in retrospect, a far more prophetic and ever wider ranging offering than the officially released original version. Much of Amos’ restlessness as an artist is revealed even at this early stage. Beginning with disc two, the remainder of her recordings are picked from, rather than presented in their complete versions. Fr…

Riffs Book

Here’s How to Write a Book You Aren’t Ashamed of

If it were easy to write a book, everyone would be doing it and fewer would be talking about it. To separate yourself from the mass of truly awful wannabe writers out there, you’re going to have to do something different – learn the craft. I know, it’s a crazy idea to actually achieve skill at something before inflicting yourself upon the rest of the world.

The desire to write isn’t enough.

You’ve got to dig deep into the language and figure out why it works, when it does, and how you can replicate it. Do you pick up a guitar and expect to zing off Eddie Valen Halen riffs immediately? I sincerely hope not because, if so, you are unteachable. I would hazard a guess that Mr. Van Halen spent years tirelessly learning and then honing his mastery of the instrument.

Why should a writer expect to do any less to master the craft of the written word? Along with a constant study of what good writing looks like, the budding novelist needs to be in the habit of writing every day. Seems so commonsense an idea that one would think it needn’t be said, but if you spend more time thinking about writing or surfing any of the zillions of writing forums talking to others about writing, you’re not getting improving your skills. Forums aren’t much less an evil than television when it comes to draining productive energy.

Not that all forum participation is are bad. They’re a great place to exchange ideas and meet interesting people with a similar interest, but it’s too easy to hang out there during the time you should be applying fingerprints to keyboard. It comes down to this – to write a book you’re proud of, you need to know how to write competently. If you don’t trust your own judgment on this, find someone who’s opinion you value to be helpful and honest, and solicit their feedback.

Some writers join writing groups in hopes of getting better. Unfortunately, good groups are few and far between. Too many have no clue what it means to offer constructive criticism, but rather sit in a circle and say, “It’s good,” which is an absolutely worthless comment to a writer. Even worse, is the group filled with sharks and vipers who make it their business to destroy any creative writing that passes through their hands. Avoid these bitter failures like the plague.

Last and most important, expect to spend years cranking out drivel and genius in alternating doses until, eventually, the latter begins to emerge more often. Doesn’t matter if you’re getting paid for your efforts yet. You’ll know it, the feeling inside that says, “I finally understand. I figured out how to write.” That’s when you’re ready to take on that book and write the novel you always knew you could.

About the Author

You could go your whole life and not figure out what’s holding you back as a writer. Book of Heavy Metal [Bonus DVD]

Book of Heavy Metal [Bonus DVD]

$16.98

Dream Evil’s third album, Book of Heavy Metal, is a brazen tribute to this always controversial genre — as likely to invoke blind devotion from its fans as it does outright dismissal from its antagonists. In fact, Dream Evil, much like loin-clothed metal warriors Manowar, care not for the latter category of sniveling vermin! No sir, their mission to metalify (is that a word?) the realm is fueled by far grander ambitions and deeper commitments than those non-believers could possibly fathom. Or so one would gather from the meaty staccato riffs, dazzling guitar solos and soaring vocals (everything classic metal is known and loved for) to be found in ? ber-metallic offerings such as “Into the Moonlight,” “Crusader’s Anthem,” and the over-the-top title track, which incidentally begins with vocalist Niklas Isfeldt’s piercing scream of: “metaaallll!” Noted metal producer Fredrik Nordstr? m is the main architect of Dream Evil’s castle — a castle also embattled by bassist Peter Stalfors and legendary drummer Snowy Shaw (King Diamond, Notre Dame, etc.), but it’s Greek guitar-shredding sub-legend Gus G. (Mystic Prophecy, Firewind, etc.) who consistently shines through with his ever-explosive, but surprisingly restrained and well-timed leads here (and on album highlight “No Way” he pulls a few Zakk Wylde tricks, surprisingly enough). Also to their credit, Dream Evil doesn’t pave their glorious road with the easy but by now rote clich? s of power metal. There’s virtually zero thrash-like speed to be found here, and many songs (“The Sledge,” “Let’s Make Rock” and “The Mirror,” in particular) actually come closest to old-school hard rock than later-day metal for inspiration. Throw in the mandatory power ballad (the decidedly syrupy “Unbreakable Chain”) and an absolute metal classic in the Accept mold named “M.O.M. (Man or a Mouse),” and you have the ingredients for a damn fine, pure metal album. In short, fans of Judas Priest, Dio, and especially Manowar wil…

 The Slap Bass Program

The Slap Bass Program

$39.95

Over the past several years The Slap Bass Program has become the undisputed bible of slap technique. The video has garnered more accolades and critical acclaim than any other program of its kind. The material has been remastered and finally released on DVD with extensive chapter breakdowns and extra features. Bass Institute of Technology (BIT) instructor Alexis Sklarevski is a phenomenal teacher, and has the rare ability to put all the pieces together in a refreshingly logical, integrated fashion. Starting with the fundamentals of slap technique, he elaborates one step at a time to incorporate complex damping and choking, funk patterns and vamps, “machine-gun” triplets, percussive right-hand tapping, flamenco-style strumming, double-stop riffs, scales, phrasing and much more. He is incredibly thorough, and his demonstrations with a guitarist and drummer show how this dynamic style can be applied in almost any musical situation. Absolutely the most complete and effective method ever produced on the slap style of bass playing. Streaming musical notation and tab is featured on the alternate video track. There’s also a Notation Book that is printable from the disc. 83 minutes.

It was much to soul singer Spanky Wilson’s surprise — she didn’t realize she had had such an impact — when British multi-instrumentalist/producer Will Holland contacted her in her Los Angeles home in 2004, professing his love of her music and wondering if she’d collaborate with him. Still, she agreed to go the studio, and together they did two songs, “Don’t Joke with a Hungry Man” and “When You’re Through,” for Holland’s solo project, Quantic, on the album Mishaps Happening. That collaboration worked out so well that they decided to make an entire record together, this time with Holland’s full band, the Quantic Soul Orchestra. Wilson’s lovely voice is the centerpiece of I’m Thankful, and it does show a bit of its age, but only in the best of ways, deepening it and giving it an added measure of credibility and authenticity while still preserving its expressiveness and strength. Attesting to Wilson’s tremendous ability is the fact that the record is very intimately and sparsely produced, making it seem as if the singer is almost in the room right with the you, the sometimes raspy and breathy line endings audible in that professional, practiced way. The band, which plays J.B.’s-inspired tight funk riffs, occasionally branching into modern jazz horn solos or even wah-wahed guitars, often uses a modern dancefloor-esque beat (in both versions of “Don’t Joke with a Hungry Man,” for example, which are different from the Quantic one), which makes sense as Holland is an able electronica producer as well as composer (besides the cover of Bo Diddley’s “You Can’t Judge a Book by Its Cover,” all the pieces on the album are completely written and arranged by him). But the music here is still funk, horns and all, and since the drums are always live, there’s still a nice organic sense about it. The neo-soul “That’s How It Was,” which reflects upon Hurricane Katrina, is touching and affecting, and as Wilson sings, “Now people are talking ’bout a need for a change/Hopi…

 USED: SPLITTING HEADACHE 0705

USED: SPLITTING HEADACHE 0705

$7.99

Right down to the gross-out comic book-style album cover, the second full album by Down to Nothing strongly recalls the early-’80s heyday of D.I.Y. street punk. At 11 songs that only rarely break the two-minute barrier, Splitting Headache is all shouted vocals, massed guitar riffs, righteously sloppy cymbal-heavy drumming, and lots and lots of good old-fashioned swearing. It’s a mess, but it’s an energetic mess, one that will leave the receptive listener aching for a little cathartic slam dancing by the end of it. Particular attention must be paid to the outstanding “Us v. Eachother,” one of the best old-school punk songs of the year. As punk evolves through each successive generation of teenagers, mutations are accepted and elaborated upon to such an extent that the punk rock of 2005 only rarely sounds like the punk rock of 1981, and the punk of 1976 sounds like classic rock in comparison. Splitting Headache, however, is proof that there are certain punk verities that will never go out of style. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide
