Play Scales

Bass Guitar Scales Under Chords

There are two types of Bass Guitar players. The first type just plays root notes and a few chords and never really advances in his bass playing. The second type learns how to properly use scales under chords and has an endless variety of new things to play. Which type are you?

If you Play Bass you’re familiar with playing the root note of whatever chord the guitar player is playing. You also may have learned how to play the triads; or the three notes that make up the chord the guitar player is playing. Nothing wrong with learning and playing those but they are actually just the Building Blocks to what truly good bass players do which is to play scales under chords.

When you play triads you’re actually playing parts of either a major or a minor scale. These two scales are a good place to start. Bear in mind that even though a song may be in the key of G, when the players shift to the C chord you should be playing a C scale, either major or minor, not still be playing a G scale. Even though the notes are almost all the same, the key to this is to at least start thinking in scales per chord.

If you want it might be easier for you to first learn two simple 5 note scales. These are called pentatonic scales. There’s a pentatonic major and a pentatonic minor scale. The pentatonic scales are the three notes that make up the chord plus two others. If the middle note in the chord is a major note you would be playing the major pentatonic scale, if the middle note is a minor note you would be playing the minor pentatonic scale. You can also use the minor pentatonic scale under seventh chords, but we’ll get into that in another article.

Let me give you an example. The guitar player is playing a C major chord. Those notes are C, E, and G. The correct pentatonic scale to play under this chord is the major which is C, D, E, G. A. Just five notes. If the guitar player is playing a C minor chord which is C, E flat, and G; you would play the minor pentatonic scale which is C, E flat, F, G, and B flat.

Once you mastered the two basic pentatonic scales, the next step in your playing is to learn both the complete major scale and the complete minor scale. Each if these scales will always sound right under certain chords. Also remember that when you use pentatonic scales, it does not matter what key the song is in, only what chord is being played at the time, which determines what scale you should be using.

Try using these simple scales under chords the next time you play and you will begin to see endless new possibilities for your bass playing.

Piano Guitar

Piano Guitar
Which is quicker to learn: the piano or guitar?

I want to learn to play guitar or piano so that the songs I write have music. Which is quicker to learn?
And I mean to learn enough to write songs and play other songs with ease. Not mastering them, but to have a few songs that I KNOW.

Simple answer: Guitar

I think the reason you want to know how to play the guitar or piano is because you want to put music to your lyrics, right? If that is true, the guitar is much easier to learn. It is also much more practical, a good acoustic guitar is only about $200-$300, while good keyboards or pianos cost $400+. And, If you learn piano the way your thinking, it is MUCH harder to find a teacher. Most piano teachers teach how to read music, not how to make your own. But why is the guitar easier? If you want to learn the piano the way your thinking, you need to learn chords for the right hand, and bass patterns for the left. Harder than it sounds. If you learn the guitar, you learn chords with the left, and strum with the right. Also harder than it sounds, but WAAAY easier than piano!!

If you decide not to believe me and you learn the piano, spend the money and get a good keyboard. You can find cheap keyboards at target for $100, but they don’t have any change in tone. So if you press a key as hard as you can, it sounds the same as if you barley touch it. This develops bad habits. Cheap keyboards also have no weight on the keys (on a real piano, or good keyboard, there is resistance when you push down, cheap keyboards don’t have any resistance) so you can get tendonitis VERY easily.

 'Round Midnight

‘Round Midnight

$11.99

Criminally unsung pianist and singer Andy Bey had the most visible career after he and his sisters Salome and Geraldine Bey broke up their performing trio after an 11-year run in 1967, but this family singing ensemble was far more than just the act that launched Andy, and he wasn’t really the focus of the group. All three siblings were highlighted equally in the trio, and their harmonies together were the ethereal kind that can only happen in a family where all involved have grown up hearing each other’s voices and phrasing every single day. The Bey trio recorded very little together, unfortunately, just a single album for RCA in 1961 and two albums for Prestige, Now! Hear!, released in 1964, and this one, ‘Round Midnight, from 1965. Part gospel, part muted R&B, part stylized blues, the Bey trio was also very much a jazz outfit, due in no small part to Andy’s underappreciated piano playing and the presence of bop veterans like Milt Hinton on bass, Osie Johnson on drums, and Kenny Burrell (who appears on about half of the tracks here) on guitar. In essence, the Bey trio sounded like a thinned-out and more jazzy, gauzy version of the Staple Singers. Highlights from this reissue, which is quite short (only around 33 minutes) by modern CD standards, are a wonderfully balanced version of Ray Charles’ “Hallelujah, I Love Her So,” a stirring take on Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child,” the ever expanding and ascending “Feeling Good,” and a fine rendition of the title track, Thelonious Monk’s “‘Round Midnight,” which has never been the easiest song in the world to sing effectively, but the trio nails it here in what might have been deemed a definitive version if it had actually been heard by more than a handful of people. Prestige released Andy Bey & the Bey Sisters in 2000, which includes both the trio’s albums for the label on one disc, and that is definitely the way to go, although this short set does do a decent job showing off the range and talents of thi…

 'Round Midnight

‘Round Midnight

$11.99

This is a typically tasteful Kenny Burrell record (reissued on CD) with the guitarist mostly emphasizing ballads. Five of the seven songs (which include “Make Someone Happy,” “Since I Fell for You” and the theme from “A Streetcar Named Desire”) find Burrell assisted by pianist Richard Wyands (who also played electric piano), bassist Reggie Johnson and drummer Lenny McBrowne. “‘Round Midnight” is played by Burrell with pianist Joe Sample, bassist Johnson and drummer Paul Humphrey while “Blues in the Night” is an unaccompanied guitar solo. Although the music overall is well-played, no real sparks fly and the results often border on being sleepy. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

 (m)orning [Advance]

(m)orning [Advance]

$13.99

Although often lumped into the emo category, Mae has rarely adhered to that genre’s conventions, and (m)orning is perhaps the furthest the bandmates have ever sounded from their Warped Tour brethren. This eight-song EP is the band’s first release since losing its contract with Capitol Records, and the disc sounds more like an album than anything else, with songs that bleed together and several tracks that top the seven-minute mark. While EPs often serve as receptacles for an artist’s discarded B-sides, (m)orning is its own entity, and the songs are crafted appropriately. “The Fisherman Song (We All Need Love)” builds steadily, adding layer upon layer of guitar before exploding into a cathartic bridge, while “The House That Fire Built” marries challenging time signatures with an epic, open-armed chorus. Several minutes later, “Boomerang” gives way to “Two Birds” with a flurry of guitar arpeggios and piano riffs, making for a fairly gorgeous transition. All of this will be little interest to outsiders, perhaps, but fans should enjoy (m)orning’s mix of experimentation and accessibility. [An advance copy was also released.] ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi

...And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness

…And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness

$16.98

They must be putting something in the water over there in Iceland that makes musicians work in unexpected ways. Their biggest pop and rock exports — Bj? rk and Sig? r Ros, respectively — have borne very little relation to what the rest of the world thinks of as pop and rock, so why should their most promising young neo-classical composer be any different? At an age when most young men are still trying to decide between grad school and the night shift at Denny’s, Olafur Arnalds has already made a name for himself as a musical maverick who skirts the edges of the classical, rock, electronic, and avant-garde worlds with enthusiastic ease, a Nico Muhly with a higher tolerance for cold weather, if you will. On his second full-length release, Arnalds moves further away from electronics to embrace a more acoustically oriented approach centered on piano and strings. Electronics do play a supporting role — they’re simply used to enhance the atmosphere here and there, but in the main, Arnalds is creating 21st century chamber music here, as the piano makes simple, elegant statements whose harmonic possibilities are further fleshed out by the strings. And Arnalds may be a modernist in terms of pushing stylistic boundaries, but he still has some old-school, downright romantic notions about melodic movement — you won’t find any polytonality or serial music among these tracks. Arnalds prefers instead to repurpose old-school harmonic conventions in a new context, offering the listener a readily accessible emotional connection but still breaking new ground. And on the few strategic spots in the album where Arnalds drops in drums and/or electric guitar and repetitive motifs, the effect is not dissimilar to the headier moments of the aforementioned Sig? r Ros, or perhaps early-? 70s Pink Floyd at their most ethereal, showing the rock crowd that they too have a point of entry into this music. ~ J. Allen, Rovi

 12 Angry Months

12 Angry Months

$12.99

Scott Lucas of Local H is far from the first musician to find inspiration in a bad romantic breakup, and he’s just one of many who has written a whole album about losing someone who was once the girl of his dreams, but the group’s seventh full-length album, 12 Angry Months, is their most ambitious and adventurous work to date, finding new musical avenues to express the many emotions that emerge in the wake of a busted relationship. 12 Angry Months opens with an unusually subdued acoustic guitar and piano prelude before the electric guitars kick in and Lucas and his ex battle over how to divvy up their mutual friends and the CD collection (“Where’s all my Kyuss records? You never liked ‘em until you met me!”), and though Lucas delivers plenty of his trademark meat-and-potatoes hard rock guitar on this album, he also shows a greater willingness to explore other textures. “White Belt Boys” and “Taxi-Cabs” flirt with minor-key Eastern modes (though they seem to be drawn from Led Zeppelin rather than a new interest in world music), “The Summer of Boats” and “Simple Pleas” are rare examples of “power ballads” that sound heartfelt and dramatic rather than maudlin, the sarcastic pop accents lurking below of the surface of “Jesus Christ! Did You See the Size of That Sperm Whale?” add to its bite, and the epic-scaled closer, “Hand to Mouth,” achieves a fitting sonic grandeur. Lyrically, 12 Angry Months runs the emotional gamut of post-breakup resentment, from ranking out on your ex’s new boyfriend (“BMW Man”), wishing misery upon her and her friends (“White Belt Boys”) and bitter resignation that the affair was doomed to failure (“Twenty-Four Hour Breakup Session”) to self-loathing (“Jesus Christ! Did You See…”), foolishly pondering another chance (“Blur”), and clumsily moving on (“Taxi-Cabs”). 12 Angry Months is often funny but just as often cuts deep enough to sting for anyone who has ever has a less-than-graceful breakup (i.e. nearly everyb…

 13 [Original Broadway Cast Recording]

13 [Original Broadway Cast Recording]

$26.98

If, in their very different ways, the Broadway musical Spring Awakening and the TV movie musical franchise High School Musical treated the subject of teenage concerns, the Broadway musical 13, with music by Jason Robert Brown, goes them one better, moving the focus earlier to the cusp of adolescence; you might call it “Junior High School Musical.” Featuring a cast entirely made up of teenagers, 13 tells the story of Evan Goldman (Graham Phillips), who is turning 13 just as his parents divorce and his mother moves him from the Upper West Side of Manhattan to a small town in Indiana. Evan’s goal is to fit in at Dan Quayle Junior High and get the coolest kids to attend his imminent bar mitzvah, which involves him in the budding romantic interests of those kids as well as the problems of his more natural comrades among the ordinary members of the student body. With a contemporary setting, 13 seems to call for the kind of contemporary teen pop music heard in High School Musical, but Brown’s take on what “contemporary pop” means seems to be ’70s pop/rock, not exactly what you’d expect kids born circa 1995 to be performing. Nevertheless, they do, even extending to creamy soul music in the manner of Philadelphia International Records (“Hey Kendra”) and reggae (“It Can’t Be True”). Brown also provides some traditional Broadway show music (“Terminal Illness”) and ’50s doo wop complete with piano triplets (“Opportunity”). But his basic idea of what 13 year olds in 2008 would be grooving to is catchy rock songs that include screaming (if usually brief) electric guitar solos. The music supports serviceable lyrics that trace the complicated ups and downs of early adolescent social interaction. Happily, those lyrics are sung by an earnest and talented cast whose members sound not far removed from the feelings the lyrics express. Still, 13 on disc comes off as a show that wasn’t really ready for Broadway. (A closing notice went up shortly before this album was releas…
