Exact Technical Specifications of the Blackberry Play Book Deals

We all love technology; we love it even more when it gets wrapped in a small case, still equipped with anything and everything. One such excellent technology ‘on the go’ device is the first tablet device from the house of Research in Motion (RIM), the blackberry play book.

Research in Motion is committed to technology in one of the most amazing ways. A detailed technical specification based listing with weight on the key highlights is mentioned as below.

Excellent Portability Aspects There is one dilemma about portable technology. On one side we want a device which is as small as possible so that we could accommodate in our trousers’ pockets and on the other hand we want the screen, the button and other aspects to be as big as our laptop. So the answer is the word – balance, as in the best spurts on technology on a medium sized device (not to small, not too big).

The playbook comes with 7″ LCD screen and a 1024 x 600 touch screen resolution. Its weight is even less than a pound (approximately 400 grams) and the product is ultra thin as well.

Measurements: 130mm x 193mm x 10mm (5.1″x7.6″x0.4″)

Symmetric Multiprocessing: This is made possible with the all new blackberry playbook operating software.

RAM Capacity: Blackberry playbook contracts deals offer 1 GHz dual Cortex A9 Processor (core processor series) along with a 1 GB RAM capacity.

Camera and Video Recording: The tablet from blackberry supports excellent video calling facility with its 2 cameras projecting high definition pictures and videos. The combination supports 1080p HD video recording as well.

• Front Camera: 3 MP

• Rear Camera: 5 MP
• Video Output: HDMI
• Video Playback: H.264, MPEG, DivX, WMV apart from the standard 1080p HD Video
• Audio playback: MP3, AAC and WMA

Memory Capacity: The playbook series comes with 3 versions in terms of memory, 64 GB, 32GB and 16 GB. Also, it comes with a 5300mAh battery.

Application Platforms Support for: WebKit/HTML-5, Adobe Mobile AIR, Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, OpenGL, Java and POSIX.

Bluetooth Compatibility: As it is a device which works in Wi-Fi technology, Bluetooth forms a very important link. Bluetooth version is 2.1 (+ EDR).

Wi-Fi Support: A discussion about Wi-Fi and its effective utilization just cannot complete without the mention of this blackberry tablet device. In terms of connection, BlackBerry PlayBook Deals come as a Wi-Fi only device. Wi-Fi Support is 802.11 a/b/g/n

The overall handling is easy like all blackberry devices, and the syncing is convenient as well. When all is said and done, the blackberry play book actually allows you to play and that too on the move.

 55 Cadillac

55 Cadillac

$16.99

Andrew W.K. has done a lot of unusual things in his career — not everyone can have a Cartoon Network show and be a member of Current 93 (not to mention run a club, release an album of J-pop covers, and publish a book of advice) at the same time. Still, 55 Cadillac may be one of the most unique additions to his body of work: it’s a collection of “spontaneous solo piano improvisations” — or “SSPIs” as W.K. calls them — inspired by his car. It’s also, like most of his projects, kind of ridiculous and kind of amazing. He’s completely committed to the concept, and he has the skills to pull it off. After all, W.K. is a classically trained pianist who began taking lessons at age four, and his keyboard chops added fizz to I Get Wet and Close Calls with Brick Walls and majestic heft to The Wolf. That prowess is the focus of this album; on his Steinway & Son Model D concert grand piano, Andrew W.K. weaves classical, jazz, rock, and experimental elements together with an accomplished ebb and flow from piece to piece and within each track. The fantastically named “Begin the Engine” (why merely start an engine when you can begin it?) is overtly classical-influenced, kicking off with the sound of crickets and a motor roaring to life before W.K.’s dazzling arpeggios and otherwise deft playing take over for nearly nine minutes. Shorter tracks like “Seeing the Car,” which tosses hints of ’50s-style rock into the mix, and the lunging, jazzy “Central Park Cruiser” are more immediate and nearly as impressive. Only a couple of moments on 55 Cadillac sound anything like Andrew W.K.’s previous albums: “Night Driver” ranges from atonal boogie-woogie to W.K. tapping on the piano’s edge (which might be the piano equivalent of a drum solo) and has an anthemic quality that’s fully realized by “Cadillac,” which boasts drums and laser-guided guitars that bring the album to a satisfyingly over the top close. Fans of his louder music might not play this often, but 55 Cadillac i…

A Catered Affair [Original Broadway Cast Recording]

A Catered Affair [Original Broadway Cast Recording]

$19.98

A Catered Affair began life as a TV play written by Paddy Chayefsky in his kitchen-sink drama style, telling the story of a Bronx taxi driver’s wife who wants to stage a big wedding for her daughter that the family can’t really afford. Gore Vidal wrote the screenplay for a 1956 movie version starring Bette Davis, and Harvey Fierstein has scripted the musical adaptation with songs by John Bucchino. Fierstein, the author of several gay-oriented stage works (notably the book for La Cage aux Folles) and an accomplished Broadway actor (he played the mother in Hairspray), has gone even deeper into realism than Chayefsky or Vidal dared in the ’50s, turning the live-in brother of the wife, a “confirmed bachelor,” into the closeted gay man he could not be on TV or in the movies 50 years earlier. Fierstein also plays the part himself, singing in his gruff bass voice. The brother, Winston, is put out because, at least initially, he is not to be invited to the wedding, and he takes his revenge in “Immediate Family,” the show’s wittiest song and one that perks the score up considerably. Bucchino, in keeping with the small scale of the work, uses a chamber orchestra of only nine musicians and creates modest musical settings in which the various characters get to express their feelings. His lyrics have a touch of Stephen Sondheim in their frankness, but not much sparkle. In the ? 50s, the wonder of the kitchen-sink style was that it seemed to be elevating the lives of ordinary people into the realm of serious drama. A musical further heightens the experiences of these housewives and working people, but also exposes their dreariness. Despite the best efforts of Fierstein, Faith Prince as the wife, and Tom Wopat as the husband, A Catered Affair as a musical doesn’t really take off. Its flaws are somewhat hidden on the cast album, however, since the problem of its small scale in a Broadway house doesn’t come in. The show probably didn’t belong on Broadway (where it didn’t sta…

They’re all techniques, easy to master and wonderful for creating dozens of cards.

Water paints – Water paints creates a lovely effect for backgrounds on cards. It has this amazing look effect of drawings reflected by the water paints.

Calligraphy – Using different types of fonts for alphabets and numbers adds a very artistic flair to card making.

Rubber Stamping – Rubber stamps can be purchased, including different colored inks to create patterns, shapes and pictures onto your cards.

Embossing – Is used with metal templates to create a raised effect on the piece of metal. This can be done using stamps, patterns and shapes that are “embossed” into the metal to create these effects.

Quilling – Quilling involves rolling several layers of thin paper to create a great effects on your cards. The paper is wound around a quill to create a basic coil shape. The paper is glued at the tip and the coil shaped, these shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns.

Punching – Using different sizes and designs of hole punch, you can create a few great textured holes that can be embellishments on your card making craft.

Iris Folding – Very similar to quilling as it involves layering different colored strips of paper to create spiral effects in your crafts.

Decoupage – includes using colored and printed paper that is glued to create effects. You could also use gold leafing techniques that come under the heading of decoupage. Decoupage is actually very simple. If you know how to cut and paste, you already have the basic techniques involved in decoupage. Basically, you cut out pictures; you glue the pictures onto an object like a card; and then cover the object and pictures with a few coats of glue/decoupage medium to protect it.

The techniques above are very simple to learn yet very effective when used in card making. You can purchase a great guidebook that will enable you to check over how each technique is executed. It will also give you easy instructions and inspiration for your imagination.

 'Round Midnight

‘Round Midnight

$16.98

Of all the string instruments, the cello is the one that is most self-sufficient when heard en masse. Villa-Lobos knew it — his “Bachianas Brasileiras Nos. 1 and 5″ are the results — and The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic have been proving it for some 30 years before the release of this album of American music of several stripes. No one needs to be told that this is a crossover special; after all, it has been released as a joint EMI Classics/Blue Note project. But this is no rah-rah album of patriotic pieties, for the CD explores the dark side of “America” as well as its soul-lifting show tunes, spirituals, and jazz tunes. Using all kinds of extended techniques that prod and scrape at the instruments, the opening “Caravan” sounds truly dangerous, capturing the dissonant strands that stick out of the Ellington 78 of the 1940s and have seldom been heard since. Bob Brookmeyer, the jazz trombonist/arranger/composer, surprises us all with “Amerika 2002: In Memoriam,” a troubled two-part meditation on the state of the union, inspired by the events of September 11. On the other hand, Leonard Bernstein’s “America” is turned into a neo-classical piece, while the “Pink Panther” theme emerges remarkably unchanged in its essential sneakiness. In what turned out to be the album’s principal coup, the cellists managed to persuade their new chief conductor, Sir Simon Rattle, to supply the “rap” for Sergio Cardenas’ hilarious “The Flower Is A Key (A Rap For Mozart).” Rattle obliges with his deep, mischievous Liverpudlian accent, putting his stamp on an album which serves notice that the tenures of Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado at the Berlin Phil are going to look awfully stodgy in comparison to the Rattle era. ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

Style Guitar
What pickups would be best for my guitar playing style?

Hi people. I’m making up my own electric guitar at the moment and need some advice. The last component I need to purchase is the pickups but I’m not sure which to get.

My main styles are heavy metal and hard rock. I play a lot of Lead Guitar and fast shred style solos but also want a powerful crunchy sound when I play power chords and rhythm. Which pickups would best suit my playing style?

I had to jump in and answer this if for no other reason than we share the same last night and might be related!

If all you’re looking for is heavy tones, then the fav pickups these days are EMG actives. If you’re building your own guitar, you can make accomodations for the battery that they require.

Passive pickups? Try the Seymour Duncan Invaders or the SH-8.

What ever you do, I would recommend this….put a high output pickup in at the bridge, but then put a lower output pickup at the neck (like a Duncan SH2 or ‘59). Then, if your amp is set up right, you can go from clean to scream with your pickup selector switch.

Greetings from Austin, Tx

Ken

Patty Griffin’s third album, her first material to be released since 1998 (the absorption of her former label, A&M, in the Polygram-Universal merger left an album Griffin cut in 2000 in the vault, where it’s sadly likely to stay), strikes a stylistic middle ground between the stark voice-and-guitar approach of her debut, Living with Ghosts, and the eclectic textures of Flaming Red. 1,000 Kisses was mostly recorded live in the studio with a small acoustic band, including Doug Lancio on guitar and mandolin, Brian Standefer on cello, Giles Reeves on vibraphone and percussion, and Michael Ramos on accordion; the feel of the performances is close and intimate, with the occasional cough or footfall audible in the background, and these sessions capture more than a bit of the cin? ma v? rit? mood of Living with Ghosts. But if the album’s production style is subtle, it’s also a superb match for the material, and without forcing their hand, Griffin and the musicians can sway from the life-on-the-street swagger of “Chief” to the Latin romanticism of “Mil Besos” to the torchy late-night blues of “Tomorrow Night” without missing a step, finding a broad emotional spectrum in these low-key sessions. And while 1,000 Kisses finds Griffin blending covers in with her own compositions for the first time, she proves to be a first-rate interpretive singer (her version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Stolen Car” actually improves on “the Boss”‘ original), and her own songs are splendid, especially the moving widow’s lament “Making Pies” and the moody lead-off track “Rain.” And regardless of who wrote the material, Griffin’s voice — a tower of strength capable of expressing remarkable emotional vulnerability — remains a wonder to behold. 1,000 Kisses finds Patty Griffin at the top of her game, and one can only hope we don’t have to wait four years for the follow-up. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

As one of heavy metal’s most popular subgenres, melodic death metal has seemingly had every possible angle covered, but Finland’s Kalmah have arguably challenged that assumption with their late-? 00s efforts, after striking upon a style enhanced by an unconventional blend of serrated thrash riffing and swirling synthesizers. This blend is once again showcased in impressive fashion by the group’s sixth full-length, 12 Gauge, which, if anything, is even more aggressive than its immediate predecessors, on the strength of raging moshers like “Bullets Are Blind,” “Hook the Monster” and “Godeye.” Yes, those aforementioned keyboards continuously shadow the frenzied guitar action (notably on “One of Fail”), and Antti Kokko’s inspired solos and occasional acoustic intros see (“Rust Never Sleeps,” the title track) bring frequent melodic contrasts to the table, but brutality ultimately reigns supreme as the dominating emotion here. Actually, even vocalist Pekka Kokko seems to put a little more “GRRR” into his growls this time around, and he certainly digs deeper in his bowels than on Kalmah’s most recent release, 2008’s For the Revolution, to help give the band’s more extreme-minded supporters exactly what they wish for with this excellent album. [The Japanese edition of 12 Gauge also featured a cover of Thin Lizzy's "Cold Sweat."] ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi

 127 Rose Avenue

127 Rose Avenue

$14.99

Released in June of 2009, the first single from Hank Williams, Jr.’s 127 Rose Avenue is called “Red, White & Pink Slip Blues,” a paean to the economic uncertainty of 21st century recession America. It’s like a lot of contemporary country singles these days, anthemic truth tales reflecting the concerns of the common (wo)man, who is struggling to find his/her place in a country that seems to have packed itself up and left them behind. The single was a hit and may carry the album to the higher rungs of the charts with it. That said, this has nothing to do with the actual quality of the music. In many ways, Williams has been remaking the same record since the early 1980s. It has his seamless blend of loud Southern rock-style guitars, rowdy, rebellious lyrics, hell-raising drums, and fist-pumping choruses, with a ballad or two thrown in for good measure. It’s a formula, but one that has worked to keep Williams with Curb Records and on the charts for nearly 30 years. No matter what the trend in the music itself, from the Urban Cowboy days on, Williams has remained in style remarkably enough because his songwriting reflects the timeless concerns of country fans. He first took up the heady electric guitar sound in the late ’70s and perfected it in the early ’80s. 127 Rose Avenue changes the production style to reflect what’s going on in contemporary country — big compressed guitars, melds of fiddles and banjos, and rock & roll drum kits. The other notable tracks on this set are the loud and proud, self-penned, “Farm Song” with a guest appearance by pedal steel guitar icon Robert Randolph; “All the Roads,” a duet with the Grascals, and, as is usual on a Hank Jr. record, an homage to his father called the “The Last Driftin’ Cowboy,” with a sample from “Honky Tonk Blues,.” If you dig Bocephus’ countless previous albums and/or are a fan of the new brand of Nashville rock that calls itself “contemporary country,” you’ll dig this. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi

 21 Spices

Some of the stodgier individuals in the jazz world labor under the delusion that a big-band project is not legitimate unless it sounds like something Buddy Rich would have done in the ’50s and is full of overdone warhorse standards that have been recorded by literally hundreds, if not thousands, of different artists over the years. But thankfully, not everyone in jazz sees things that way. 21 Spices, in fact, takes big-band music into both the jazz-rock fusion realm and the world jazz realm. This 2011 release is a collaboration between Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu (who composed all of the material), drummer Simon Phillips, and Germany’s NDR Big Band; also on board are Michel Alibo on electric bass and Roland Cabezas on electric guitar. And with this lineup in place, the result is a fusion album that has a strong world music influence and sounds a bit Weather Report-ish in spots, only with the muscular horn section that the NDR Big Band brings to the table. Naturally, Gurtu’s mastery of Indian percussion and the wordless, Indian-style scat vocals that the Mumbai native provides gives 21 Spices (which contains both live and studio performances) some Indian appeal at times, but Indian music is hardly the only world music influence that asserts itself on this 55-minute CD. Actually, Latin music is a more prominent influence, especially on “Broken Rhythms” and “1-2 Beaucoup.” Meanwhile, “Balato” and “Jhulelal” both incorporate elements of African music. So in terms of world music influences, 21 Spices is pleasingly far-reaching. And it is also an exciting demonstration of the fact that regardless of what bop snobs have to say, big-band recordings don’t have to recycle old Buddy Rich charts in order to have validity. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

25th Anniversary: Live in Amsterdam [DVD & CD]

Toto’s career has been a rather strange one. Several top-flight Los Angeles session musicians — many of whom performed on Boz Scaggs’ classic 1976 album Silk Degrees — formed Toto and achieved instant success with their 1978 self-titled debut album. Commercial success was fairly consistent, but many critics never liked Toto and the band’s pariah status was forever sealed when 1982’s Toto IV won the Grammy award for Album of the Year. Toto found their selling power in the U. S. fade in the ’90s while their star status in Europe and Asia shot upward; their mainstream U.S. pop/rock style probably sounded exotic to overseas audiences. Despite several personnel changes, the band never gave up. They celebrated their 25th anniversary with a concert at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on February 17, 2003. This show was filmed for the enjoyable DVD 25th Anniversary: Live in Amsterdam (a CD version is also available). Vocalist/guitarist Steve Lukather, vocalist/keyboardist David Paich, vocalist Bobby Kimball, bass guitarist Mike Porcaro, and drummer Simon Phillips (along with supplemental guitarist/background vocalist Tony Spinner and keyboardist/background vocalist John Jessel) were on tour promoting 2002’s covers album Through the Looking Glass when they made this recording, and the DVD finds Toto performing giant hits such as “Africa,” “I Won’t Hold You Back,” “Rosanna,” and “Hold the Line” along with plenty of intriguing album tracks. “Girl Goodbye,” “Goodbye Elenore,” “Child’s Anthem,” and “I’ll Supply the Love” open the show in the form of a lengthy medley. “Gift with a Golden Gun” is one of the in-concert rarities. Through the Looking Glass is represented by the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” Steely Dan’s “Bodhisattva,” and the Temptations’ “I Can’t Get Next to You.” (It’s interesting to note that while many Toto members had performed on Steely Dan recordings, “Bodhisattva” and its parent Countdown to Ecstasy …

 26 Letters 12 Notes

26 Letters 12 Notes

Dave Mason is a co-founder of the legendary rock band Traffic. He’s played on some of the greatest rock albums in history: Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland, George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, and Delaney & Bonnie’s Motel Shot among them. 26 Letters 12 Notes (issued on his own Out of the Box imprint through RED Distribution) is his first new album in a decade. Originally produced by Mason at home in California, additional recording was done in Detroit and Miami. It’s a back to basics, ’70s style rock and Brit soul record. It contains some modern co-production by a number of folks including the Motor City’s Mark and Brian Pastoria (some of the mixing was also done in Detroit). It reveals Mason not only as a solid, focused, and relevant songwriter in the rock idiom, but as an expressive vocalist of uncanny power and depth (he’s actually gotten better over the decades). His guitar playing has continued to develop and grow: he is a far more interesting player than his peer Eric Clapton is at this stage of the game. There isn’t anything showy or hyper-consciously “dazzling” in the presentation, Mason’s always been humble, and he sets his playing and singing to be true to his songs. There are some stellar guests on the set, including Willie Nelson (playing guitar, not singing), and percussionist and vocalist Sheila E. The big surprise is soul/gospel vocalist Beth Griffith belting it out with great firepower. The production is warm, lively, and immediate. It’s not in your face; instead it concentrates on presenting the music as alive dynamically, though it is rich and deep in its textures. The opener, “Good 2 U,” is classic Mason, with a bluesy guitar riff backed by a taut string arrangement. The blues ring out in fills against Mason’s open, emotional baritone. The guitar winds around a funky backbeat on the refrain, complete with a chorus of backing vocalists, a tight snare, and a slithering B-3. “One Day” opens with the same raucous Stratocaster playing a gos…

 3 + 3 [Bonus Track]

3 + 3 [Bonus Track]

Recorded in 1973, 3 + 3 was a major turning point for the Isley Brothers. With this album, the Isleys moved their T-Neck label from Buddah to Epic/CBS (which became Epic/Sony in the early ’90s), and it was at Epic that they unveiled their new lineup. Lead singer Ronald Isley and his siblings O’Kelly and Rudolph remained, but the Isleys became a sextet instead of a trio when cousin Chris Jasper and younger brothers Ernie and Marvin were added. This new lineup was called 3 + 3, and the addition of Jasper on keyboards, Ernie on guitar, and Marvin on bass added exciting new elements to the Isleys’ sound. One of finest R&B bassists of the 1970s, the ever-so-funky Marvin is in a class with heavyweights like Larry Graham and Louis Johnson — and Ernie is a stunning guitarist who is heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix but has a distinctive style of his own. The Isleys had always been lovers of rock, but with the addition of Ernie, their sound became even more overtly rock influenced. Nonetheless, the rock and pop elements didn’t alienate R&B audiences, which ate this album up. The single “That Lady” (which is based on an Impressions-like gem they had recorded in 1964) was a major hit, and the Isleys are equally captivating on soul interpretations of Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze,” James Taylor’s “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” and the Doobie Brothers’ “Listen to the Music.” With this superb album, the Isley Brothers sounded better than ever — and they gained a lot of new fans without sacrificing the old ones. [The 2003 reissue of 3 + 3 boasts remastered sound, new liner notes by David Ritz that draw from new interviews with Marvin and Jasper, and the inclusion of one bonus track: a previously unreleased live version of "That Lady" recorded in 1980.] ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

 33 Acoustic Guitar Instrumentals

33 Acoustic Guitar Instrumentals

$13.98

Clarence White’s guitar playing was captured on a number of albums and in a variety of styles between the mid-’60s and his early death in 1973. Still, one cannot help but listen to the Kentucky Colonels Appalachian Swing! and want to hear more of White’s fine acoustic work. Now, on 33 Acoustic Guitar Instrumentals, one can. These recordings were captured on a home tape during 1962, featuring no more than White’s lead guitar with Roger Bush playing rhythm. This album, recorded two years before Appalachian Swing!, shows just how far his flatpicking had advanced. Most of the instrumentals are short — from 44 seconds to a little over two minutes — and feature well known tunes such as “Sugarfoot Rag,” “Nine Pound Hammer,” and “Sally Goodin.” Some material — “In the Pines” and “I Am a Pilgrim” — is shot through with bluesy, soulful playing. Even on straightforward material like “Banks of the Ohio” and “Old Joe Clark,” White shows an incredible sense of rhythm, timing, and melody. The oldest of warhorses, “Wildwood Flower,” sounds fresh here, and perhaps it is because there is always a sense of openness and intelligence in White’s playing, something that is absent from contemporary flatpickers who trade style for speed. The liner notes replace the normal biographical information with testimonials of acoustic players influenced by White, including Jerry Garcia, Tony Rice, and Doc Watson. For those who are already familiar with White, this album is a must have; for the unfamiliar, this is a great place to start. 33 Acoustic Guitar Instrumentals is a lovely album from a master flatpicker captured in rare form. ~ Ronnie D. 3D

3D

$17.98

When one first glances at the cover of Casey Driessen’s 3D, it’s difficult to know what to expect. Driessen’s red hair is brushed back, and he’s wearing these funky 3D glasses with a “3″ on one lens and a “D” on the other. From this info, one might be prepared for spacey electronic music or perhaps a surrealistic singer/songwriter. But the final clue at the bottom on the cover photo is the head of a fiddle, Driessen’s instrument of choice, which may or may not lead one to guess 3D’s dominant musical style: progressive instrumental Celtic music. Listeners have probably never heard “Sally in the Garden” arranged with drums, programming, and an electric sruti box, though the addition of Jerry Douglas’ dobro, Tim O’Brien’s bouzouki, and Driessen’s fiddle add stable elements. It’s as though the players started with a fairly traditional base of acoustic instruments and then inserted percussion, progressive material, and the occasional electronic element to spice things up. Even on more conservative — instrumentally speaking — tunes like Driessen’s “The Confusion Before Dreams” proves quite compelling, and the vocal numbers, often a distraction on primarily instrumental albums, are fun. There’s a funky take on “Sugarfoot Rag” with Driessen’s ultra-cool vocal and Darrell Scott spunky guitar work. While a number of semi-progressive musicians like O’Brien have gotten lots of credit for pushing bluegrass and Celtic in new directions, the results (as with O’Brien’s dual release in 2005) seem rather tepid compared to 3D. This is fun music that will probably offend a few traditionalists while letting everyone else know that the old music can grow in exciting and unpredictable ways. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi

 4th & Wall

4th & Wall

$14.98

For the uninitiated, West Indian Girl are not a reggae band, and for those who haven’t been paying attention, they aren’t an electro-studio duo anymore, either. With 4th & Wall the twosome has expanded to a sextet with the addition of live bass, drums, percussion, and guitar, further swelled by a host of guest musicians, greatly extending WIG’s aural vistas and influences — which now span the musical spectrum from synth pop to classic rock, from new wave to techno. A Keith Richards-ish guitar lick enlivens the infectious “Get Up,” echoes of “Free Bird” soar in the finale of “Sofia,” the Soup Dragons’ spirit swirls around “Lost Children,” and Echo & the Bunnymen’s moody atmospheres pool around “To Die in LA” and “All My Friends.” On the irresistible “Solar Eyes,” the group juxtaposes bubbly synth pop against a lusher new romantic style and a four-on-the-floor disco beat, then stirs in spacy effects and a funky feel. Sadly, though, the set’s sequencing is a bit slack, occasionally making for jarring shifts in styles between tracks, which is a shame, because in reality 4th & Wall is actually a quite coherent album. This is particularly evident in the songs’ themes, which revolve around the lure of L.A. and its nearby beaches, as well as more universal interpersonal subjects. It’s equally true of the music, even as the band drifts from gentle soft pop through Boston-styled keyboard rockers, the hefty space rocker “Rise from the Dead,” and upbeat dance tunes. The styles may change and the atmospheres alter from languorous to driving, but what remains constant are the lilting vocals, strong melodies, and psychedelic keyboards that remain the core of WIG’s sound. The pumping “Blue Wave” was the first number selected as a sound clip, but the new wave-ish “To Die in LA” and the breezy “All My Friends” would have worked just as well, while “Solar” should tear up the dancefloor. Like West Indian Girl’s California home, the band’s music is an exhila…
