Choosing a Twin Loop Wire Binding Machine
Twin loop wire (also known as Wire-O) binding provides an exceptionally elegant and professional looking solution for report and proposal binding. Perhaps you have seen proposals that have been bound with wire binding and would like to try this type of binding in your office. This article is intended to give you a few tips to help in deciding what wire binding machine is best for your needs. Here are a few things to consider:
1. Find a wire binding machine with a good wire binding closer on it. Many of the twin loop binding machines on the market are fine for binding a few books a month. However, if you are looking to do any volume of twin-loop binding you definitely want a good wire binding closer.
Less sturdy wire closers will slip over time and you will find that the spines of your books will be closed more on one side than the other. Both the GBC w400 and w200 wire binding machines are known to have this problem over time. Look at the Akiles WireMac binding machines, the Renz Manual Wire binding Combos or the stand alone wire closers from Rhino, GBC or Tamerica for excellent wire binding closing performance.
2. Choose the wire binding machine that will best fit the size of books that you need to bind. Wire binding machines are available with two different hole patterns. Some wire-o machines punch a 3:1 pitch or 32 hole pattern (for 11″ documents). These wire-o binding machines will accept wires as small as 3/16″ and as large as 9/16″. For documents larger than 9/16″ binding machines are available that punch a 2:1 pitch or 21 hole pattern (for 11″ documents). These pieces of binding equipment will accept wires between 5/8″ and 1-1/4″.
Most twin loop machines punch either a 3:1 pattern or a 2:1 hole pattern. However, if you are looking to bind both large and small books you might want to consider the Akiles WireMac Duo. The WireMac Duo will punch both a 3:1 pitch pattern and a 2:1 pitch pattern and will close all sizes of wire up to 1-1/4″. It is currently the only wire binding combo machine of its kind on the market and is reasonably priced at under $700.
3. Look for a twin loop binding machine that is built for the volume of wire binding that you need to do. If you are only looking to bind a few books then by all means purchase the Akiles Offiwire, it will handle the job. However, if you are looking to bind hundreds or thousands of books don’t buy a machine made of plastic.
Look at the Akiles WireMac line of binding machines. Akiles makes the WireMac, WireMac Duo and WireMac E wire binding machines, ranging from under $500 to over $1500. Or, if you are really going to do a lot of wire binding consider a modular wire-binding system from GBC or Rhin-O-Tuff wire binding machine. Either way, ask yourself how many books you plan on binding and buy accordingly.
4. Decide if you are going to need to bind books that are longer or shorter than 11″. If you need to bind books shorter than 11″ then you are looking for a wire binding machine with disengageable dies. This simply means that you can stop one of the pins from punching so that you don’t have half a hole hanging off the end of your paper.
If you are looking to bind documents longer than 11″ you need to find a machine with a punching throat that is either longer or is open. The Akiles WireMac series of punches comes equipped with a 14″ punching throat for legal sized wire binding and has a small pin on the right side of the open throat for punching longer documents. If you are looking for something a lot bigger for large volume calendar jobs you might look at the Rhino HD7500 (a 24″ modular punch) and the Rhino HD8024 wire closer (a 24″ wire closer).
Overall, your best bang for your buck right now in double-o binding machines is the Akiles WireMac line of punch and bind combos or the Renz manual wire combos. However, look at the options, compare the features and decide for yourself.

16 Biggest Hits $9.99 Like the many other 16 Biggest Hits compilations released by Legacy, Clint Black’s entry in the budget-line series is an inexpensive and even-handed collection of his bigger hits, sequenced chronologically. The time range featured here spans from Black’s blockbuster debut album, Killin’ Time (1989), to his final release for RCA, D’lectrified (1999). A pair of Greatest Hits volumes already covered this time span, granted, and those volumes indeed served their purpose well, but it’s nice to have a cheap, single-disc option like 16 Biggest Hits. There’s one potential problem with this particular compilation, however, and it’s the even-handed approach: while it’s nice to have some of Black’s mid- to late-’90s hits featured, his late-’80s and early-’90s recordings are generally considered to be superior, with his first three albums in particular standing head and shoulders above his later releases. Those first three albums — Killin’ Time, Put Yourself in My Shoes (1990), and The Hard Way (1992) — are covered by only the first seven songs here on 16 Biggest Hits, and it’s hard not to wish there were more inclusions from those albums. After all, Killin’ Time alone spawned five Top Three hits. This potential grievance aside, the even-handedness of 16 Biggest Hits at least paints an accurate picture of how Black’s music lost some of its edge over the years as his star steadily faded, even if he continued to score number one hits like “Summer’s Comin’,” “Like the Rain,” “Nothin’ but the Taillights,” “The Shoes You’re Wearing,” and “When I Said I Do” — all of which are included here. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi |

A Swingin’ Christmas $9.99 Christmas is a time for many things, but musically, the favorite always seems to be lowered standards. Too many times, bands or vocalists trot out the usual chestnuts with few acknowledgements of their usual artistic capabilities. How nice, then, to find Tony Bennett continuing to exercise his high quality control with 2008’s A Swingin’ Christmas, featuring the Count Basie Big Band. The excellence on display begins with the charts, which on the big-band sides come mostly from Bill Holman — along with a beautiful arrangement on “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm” from the dearly departed Frank Foster (long a linchpin for the Basie band). Holman’s great accomplishment here is to treat standards — like “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” and “My Favorite Things” — as though they were ripe for the reimagining (which, of course, they are). Producer Phil Ramone balances the accompaniment well, moving from small group to big band with no speed bumps, and the basic quartet is anchored by pianist Monty Alexander (who Bennett thanks “for sitting in and playing in a Basie style”). Although Bennett’s voice shows increasing signs of age here, his interpretive gifts are untouched and unimpeachable, especially when the material calls for sensitivity (the closing “O Christmas Tree,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”). ~ John Bush, Rovi |

A Turn in the Dream-Songs $16.98 Following the splendid career highlight Em Are I, and after a couple of collaborative detours — the uneven-at-best The Bundles with Kimya Dawson, and the delightfully loopy Come On Board with weirdo folk icon Peter Stampfel — lovably quirky New York songwriter/cartoonist Jeffrey Lewis returns with a highly likable sixth album full of his characteristic wit, whimsy, sardonic self-deprecation, and transcendental musings. Lewis’ regular backing band the Junkyard are absent here (under that billing, at least), as are the occasional bursts of electrified rowdiness they’ve provided in the past. In their place are a clutch of mostly British indie folk players (including the Wave Pictures’ Franic Rozycki, who provides some fine mandolin work throughout), and a bevy of guests — members of the Vaselines, Dr. Dog, Au Revoir Simone, Misty’s Big Adventure, and Schwervon! –? who help flesh out the album’s pleasantly loose, vaguely psych-folky vibe, particularly on the tone-setting “To Go and Return,” whose spacy, surreal lyric (a somewhat Seussian nonsense rhyme about the cosmic metaphysics of wish-making) is the source of the album’s peculiar title. Despite all the friends he’s amassed here, Lewis remains an archetypal loner, a condition which informs many of the album’s sharpest numbers, from the lovelorn lambast “How Can It Be?” (featuring peppy, ’60s-style backing vocals by the Dr. Dog boys) and the goofy “Cult Boyfriend” (which likens Lewis’ romantic boom-and-bust cycles to a rapid-fire list of pop culture obscurities), to “I Got Lost”’s gentle, plain-spoken disquisition on disconnection, and “When You’re by Yourself”’s wryly tender dissection of the practical logistics of loneliness — not to mention the hyperbolic shaggy-dog suicide saga “So What If I Couldn’t Take It Anymore.” (As usual, though still impressively, these songs rarely, if ever, come across as bitter or overly self-pitying; Lewis hasn’t lost his knack for balancing depressed and depressing… |

Learning Guitar for Dummies (DVD)
This was the first DVD I ever bought on the subject. I ordered I even before I bought my first guitar, so I was a real beginner.
The pace is very slow, but as a beginner, I liked it that way. It helped me to feel like I had the potential to keep up. This was very important to me so that I wouldn’t give up.
Some may feel the pace of this DVD is too slow, but if you are interested in starting slowly… this may be just the right pace for you.
Eventually, I started collecting Guitar DVDs and I now have over 20, but this was the one that held my interest long enough to make it past the training wheel stages.
This DVD is great for people who have little or no experience with playing guitar and want to begin without investing in private lessons (private lessons are a good idea if you can afford them). The DVD contains basics such as posture, hand position, a few basic chords, and strumming. It even has a very basic introduction to fingerstyle (playing with your fingers instead of a pick).
I had taken a very basic class a few years ago, then taught myself barre chords and a few scales. I recently invested in a good mid-range guitar (Martin DC-16 GTE), so I picked up this dvd as a refresher. I found myself skipping to chapter 8 before I came to anything I hadn’t learned yet. So the title “Learning Guitar for Dummies” is apt. It is great for beginners as a SUPPLEMENT to private lessons. For intermediate players who are looking to build such skills as fingerstyle, barre chords, scales and improvisation, etc, you’ll need something a bit more advanced than this. I found myself more bored and drooling over the Taylor 814 CE he was playing than focusing on the really basic concepts he was presenting.
Other drawbacks of the video: 1) his singing is terrible 2) he doesn’t go over such basics as selecting and changing strings or some accessories that are helpful even for the novice (i.e. string winders, supplies for cleaning and maintaining the instrument- like a lint free cloth, a humidifier, etc). 3) in the video he does not always follow the suggested fingering shown in the chart on the screen (i.e. on a few of the songs he plays a G chord with the 1,2, and 4 fingers instead of the 1,2,3 as shown in the chart- I also prefer the 1,2,4 fingering, but this may be confusing to some beginners). Other than that it is a good introductory video for the beginner.
I used to take guitar lessons when I was about 15 years old. Learned some basic cords and could play a few songs. I had not picked up the guitar in many years. My 12 year old Daughter decided to learn to play the guitar so I got my old guitars out and started playing again. I ordered this DVD Learning Guitar for Dummies, by Jon Chappell and found it to be an excellent First Lesson for the beginner guitar player. Not only did I learn some thing’s I did not know but my daughter sat through the whole DVD with her guitar. Jon has a great way of explaining things slowly and easily. I would recommend this DVD for any beginner guitar player. Even if you know nothing about the guitar, you will by the end of this DVD. I had also ordered another Guitar learning DVD and found it to be not nearly as good as this one. Two Thumbs up to this DVD! The only thing I was disappointed about was I could not find any other DVD’s put out by Jon Chappell.
My daughter aged 8yrs decided that she wanted to learn to play the guitar a couple of mnths ago. The middle of October (last month) we bought her one. Suprised to see how she could manage the frets she now has lessons at school, sadly it appears for this yr. only.
I puchased this DVD for her not really knowing what to expect only to find this Brilliant step by step guide, simplistic to follow in every way.
The DVD zooms in on the guitar itself and positioning on fingers on frets etc. at the right hand side of the screen is the cord Mr. Chappell is playing once again denoting where positioning of fingers should be.
Having had no previous experience at all our daughter found this DVD informative and extremely easy to follow as did her father, only unable to follow correctly at the 9th out of 10 chapters when “Fingerpicking” was introduced.
This dvd is aimed at no particular age group only Beginners of whatever age. Mr. Chappell’s experience and honesty shines through as he repeatedly states you will not beable to play overnight that practice is a must all the things beginners need to hear.
I cannot praise this DVD enough it hss to be one of the best if not the best DVD’s and an invaluable aid to guitar playing irrespective of which type of guitar you choose to play.
If you are looking for a Beginners guide to learning to play the guitar i cannot recommend this one too highly. You will not regret this purchase!.
I bought the Guitar For Dummies book when I got my guitar. I’m working my way through the book so thought this DVD would help – I haven’t gone to an instructor (yet). It’s not as in-depth as the book (there simply isn’t enough DVD space), but it is very useful to actually see the strumming and finger techniques Chapell uses.
I’d recommend you buy the book along with this DVD, that way you can continue to progress once you’ve gone the DVD lessons.
I bought a number of different “teach yourself” tools on a variety to media to get myself started on the guitar and this is definitely top of the bunch. Unlike many of the others, this DVD schools the learner in exactly the same way a (very expensive) private tutor would. It spends time on teaching not just the basic notes, but also different ways of strumming and finger picking (I’ve found that may of the other books, CDs, and PC CDROMs tend to ignore the right hand).
The DVD progresses at a steady speed and allows the learner to stop and achieve competence in one area before moving on and, unlike some of the private music tutors that you run the risk of hiring from your local paper, this guy actually knows what he is doing. He Can Play AND teach!
I can’t say enough positive things about this DVD – it does exactly what it says on the cover!
Learn & Master Guitar is serious guitar training.
Winner of the 2008 Acoustic Guitar Magazine Players’ Choice Award, two Telly Awards and an AEGIS Award for Excellence in Education, Learn & Master Guitar is widely recognized as the best home instruction course for learning guitar available anywhere. It consists of 20 professionally produced DVDs, 5 Jam-Along CDs, a 100+ page lesson book, and a free online student support site. It is the only instructional package you’ll ever need on your journey toward mastery of the guitar. All you provide is the practice!
Let’s face it, really learning guitar can seem like a daunting task. There are so many different things to learn and practice. What you’re really looking for is high-quality, step-by-step Video Instruction that takes you from beginner (or intermediate) all the way through advanced instruction. A thirty-minute “Learn Guitar Overnight” video isn’t going to do it, and advanced instructional videos are usually too specialized and they often assume that you know more than you do. That’s never a problem with Learn & Master Guitar, because it is a complete step-by-step video instruction course that takes you from any skill level, even if you’re a total novice, through the advanced skills training used by the pros. Not a beginner? Just skip through the basics and jump into the more advanced training.
Printed materials alone, when not accompanied by detailed video instruction, can leave you frustrated and confused. Software-based instruction is cumbersome and difficult to use. Private instruction is costly and inconvenient. And perhaps worst of all, none of these methods are really any fun!
Which costs less – Guitar lessons on DVD or Guitar lessons from a personal teacher?
Guitar lessons on DVD are far less expensive than in-studio guitar lessons with a teacher. Most teachers charge $25-$50 for one private lesson. When I taught private guitar lessons, my rates were 30 dollars for a one hour lesson! For $29.95 you can have over 9 hours of guitar lessons on four DVDs plus additional DVD that has over 165,000 tabs on it! These DVDs are a great way to learn how to play the guitar. You could take over 18 guitar lessons on DVD for the price of one Guitar Lesson with a teacher. Plus, with lessons on DVD, you spend no gas money commuting to your guitar teacher. Also, you can play the lessons over and over again instead of remembering everything the teacher taught that week.

Audioslave $4.99 The debut of thundering supergroup Audioslave–featuring members of Rage Against the Machine post-Zack de la Rocha with ex-Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell–is as much curio as fascinating blend of visions. Cornell might be outnumbered, but his unmistakable holler and nihilistic imagery ensure that Audioslave, the album, recalls early Soundgarden. That’s especially true since de la Rocha took Rage… |

Fire Down Below $3.23 Here’s a movie that only a Steven Seagal fan could love. It’s not nearly as good as Under Siege (the movie destined to remain Seagal’s high-water mark), but not any worse than Above the Law. He’s on good terms with the local yokels (including Marg Helgenberger and Harry Dean Stanton), but locks … |

Baden-Baden $15.99 Consisting of six originals and a concluding cover of Roxy Music’s majestic “A Song for Europe,” Baden-Baden, Michaela Meli? n’s debut solo effort, shows that techno is far from dead, it merely takes on different shapes. In this case, while less glitch-happy than most IDM (the abbreviated percussion loop on “Ignza Guenther House” being a notable exception) and more inclined to Kompakt’s microhouse focus, Baden-Baden is very much the kind of techno that can be danced to as well as reflectively enjoyed. Constructed by Meli? n using everything from cello and melodica to Spanish guitar, with collaborator Carl Oesterhelt providing the beats (and quite well at that — check out the simple but effective grooves on “Stra? e”), Meli? n’s suggests a comfortable eclecticism that integrates a variety of sonics and approaches into a warm whole. Often her songs build layer upon layer in the most subtle of fashions, until you find yourself hearing majestic combinations of strings and guitar and odd textures all intertwined. The slow-building opener, “Brautlied,” besides demonstrating Meli? n’s ear for album sequencing, suggests everything from Kraftwerk’s reflective motorik to minimalist compositions from P? rt and Glass, with Meli? n adding a beautiful, twinkling edge to the proceedings, like a music box running down a freeway. Similar uses of loops and detailed construction can be heard on songs like “Verkehr,” where what sounds like accordion provided both a steady background drone and an abbreviated melody, and the title track, where an almost metallic, siren-like sound provides a nervous tension to the proceedings, matched by the crisp layering of beats. As for “A Song for Europe,” Meli? n uses her very Nico-like singing to create a cover that actually wouldn’t have been too out of place on that singer’s album The End, beautifully dark and reflective thanks to the string parts and rhythmless, piano-led arrangement. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi |

Be Yourself Tonight [Bonus Tracks] $14.99 On Be Yourself Tonight, the Eurythmics’ most commercially successful and hit-laden album, the duo meticulously blended the new wave and electronic elements that dominated their previous sets with the harder straight-edged rock and soul that would dominate later sets, resulting in a nearly perfect pop album. This disc scored no less than four hit singles and kept them a mainstay on MTV’s play lists during the channel’s heyday. Fusing pop, soul, rock, electronic beats, and even gospel, this is arguably the duo’s finest moment. The first hit, “Would I Lie to You,” is a straightforward rocker, complete with great guitar licks, a soulful horn section, and Annie Lennox sounding as vicious and vivacious as ever. The second single, which was a huge chart-topper in Europe, “There Must Be an Angel,” is nothing short of shimmering beauty, with Lennox providing truly angelic vocals and Stevie Wonder adding an enchanting harmonica solo. Aretha Franklin lends her powerhouse pipes for the duet “Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves,” which has gone on to become an immortal feminist anthem. From the soulful electronic beats (a rarity) in “It’s Alright (Baby’s Coming Back)” to the beauty of the Elvis Costello duet “Adrian” to the pain and longing of the sorrowful rocker “Better to Have Lost in Love (Than Never to Have Loved at All),” this album runs through a wide array of musical styles, with each song standing tall on its own two feet. This disc is, without a doubt, one of the best pop/rock albums from the 1980s and one of the grandest, most creative albums delivered by the ever-appealing and innovative duo of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. A true classic. [This reissue of the album includes five bonus tracks, including a live version of "Conditioned Soul."] ~ Jose F. Promis, Rovi |

Blood Money $13.98 Tom Waits has said: “I like a beautiful song that tells you terrible things. We all like bad news out of a pretty mouth.” When it comes to the material on Blood Money, I don’t know if I can call Waits’ mouth pretty, but he certainly offers plenty of bad news in a very attractive, compelling way. Released simultaneously with Alice, a recording of songs written in 1990, Blood Money is a set of 13 songs written by Waits and Kathleen Brennan in collaboration with dramatist Robert Wilson. The project was a loose adaptation of the play Woyzeck, originally written by German poet Georg Buchner in 1837. The play was inspired by the true story of a German soldier who was driven mad by bizarre army medical experiments and infidelity, which led him to murder his lover — cheery stuff, to be sure. Thematically, this work — with its references to German cabarets and nostalgia — echoes Waits’ other Wilson collaborative project, Black Rider. Musically, however, Blood Money is a far more elegant, stylish, and nuanced work than the earlier recording. With bluesman Charlie Musselwhite, reedman Colin Stetson, bassist and guitarist Larry Taylor, marimbist Andrew Borger, and others — Waits plays piano, organ, marimba, calliope, and guitar — this is a theater piece that feels like a collection of songs that reflect a perverse sense of black humor and authentic wickedness in places. The protagonists of these songs are so warped and wasted by life that they are caricatures; it’s impossible not to like them and to not be repulsed by yourself for doing so. For starters, the set opens with “Misery Is the River of the World,” a circus-like tango wrapped around a series of dialectical aphorisms: “If there’s one thing you can say about mankind/There’s nothing kind about man.” When a piano cascades up a minor scale in dramatic showmanship, Waits chants the refrain, “Misery is the river of the world,” with seeming delight. On “God’s Away on Business” (with guests Stewart Copeland o… |

Bronx in Blue $18.98 Since his doo wop beginnings in the 1950s, Dion has tried a number of different musical styles, including the rock & roll of his early-’60s solo work and his late-’60s folk-pop phase. He also played the blues, if less prominently (see for example the belatedly released Bronx Blues album), and he again tries the style here in what he bills as a return to his roots, to music he listened to on long-distance radio stations in his youth. Accompanying himself on one or more guitar tracks, and joined by a percussionist, he runs through a selection of blues standards that leans heavily on Robert Johnson, but also includes songs by Chicago blues stalwarts like Howlin’ Wolf and even that country bluesman Hank Williams. Dion is an excellent guitarist, and his voice is in good shape. His approach is not exactly traditional; he throws in his own words to several songs, going on about the benefits of green tea in Lightnin’ Hopkins’ “You Better Watch Yourself,” for example, and includes two originals, “I Let My Baby Do That” and “If You Wanna Rock & Roll.” At the same time, the spare instrumentation gives the performances an authentic feel, and Bob Schnieders has been hired to write extensive liner notes detailing the sources of the songs, as if the album were an academic exercise. Dion isn’t going to make anybody forget Blind Willie McTell or Jimmy Reed on this album, but his renditions are effectively and sincerely performed. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi |

Christmas Spirit $9.99 It has become patently obvious that San Angelo, Texas’ Los Lonely Boys have arrived at their true mainstream place in the musical order when they can release a Christmas album on Sony. And what’s not to like? Everything the brothers Garza play is infected with pure bluesy groove and roots rock verve. The ten songs here are Garza-ized takes on Christmas standards: “Jingle Bells,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Away in a Manger,” “Feliz Navidad,” “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” “Carol of the Bells,” and “Silent Night.” The latter two are fine instrumentals. “Carol of the Bells,’” especially, is a deeply satisfying guitar and percussion workout that embraces not only hard rhumba drumming, but funk, Mexican folk music, and screaming blues-rock. Hopefully, their version of “Run Rudolph Run” will make Chuck Berry proud, with its rumbling upright piano and bassline, and Henry’s guitar offering his best modern read of Berry’s instrumental innovation on the I-IV-V progression. But the real highlights here are the two originals that open the set. “I’ve Longed for Christmas” is a bona fide new seasonal tune with its warmth, soulful wah-wah guitar, and laid-back drum kit shuffling around a slippery groove. The brothers sing unfettered joyful harmonies about giving, peace, love, and joy — and the celebration of Christ’s birth. “She’ll Be My Everything for Christmas” is inspired by Fats Domino’s New Orleans brand of rhythm & blues with loose strolls up and down the keyboard and his celebration of love between two people. The relaxed, back to basics approach works well. So if you’re looking for something else to put in your holiday selection, Christmas Spirit is an excellent bet , not only to inspire cheer in yourself, but to delight your guests as well. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

Flex-Able Leftovers $11.98 Before his high-profile gigs with David Lee Roth and Whitesnake, Steve Vai served time as Frank Zappa’s guitarist in the early ’80s. And judging by Vai’s first two solo albums released around this time, 1984’s Flex-Able and Flex-Able Leftovers, he was heavily influenced by Zappa’s songwriting and compositional skills. Although there is definitely a noticeable Zappa stamp on the tunes, Vai’s own personality and awe-inspiring guitar chops are what really make these two solo albums so impressive. Also, Vai was one of the few guitar heroes of the ’80s to stress the importance of songwriting over mindless soloing. While Flex-Able was a full album, Flex-Able Leftovers was originally just an EP of material that didn’t make it onto the debut. When Flex-Able was released on CD in 1988, a few tracks from Leftovers were included as a bonus, yet fans have wondered all along if the full EP would ever be released on CD. Ten years later, their wish came true. Not only has the EP been re-released, but unreleased tracks from that era are included, making up a full-length album. Vai’s over-the-top humor can be sampled on the profanity-fest “#?@! Yourself” and the goofy “So Happy,” while “Massacre” and “Natural Born Boy” feature his immense guitar skill. And Vai’s unique songwriting talent is evident on such tracks as “Burnin’ Down the Mountain,” “The Beast of Love,” and “Bledsoe Blvd.” The 1998 version of Flex-Able Leftovers is highly recommended to guitar freaks everywhere, as well as lovers of completely original and cutting-edge rock music. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi |

Ghost in the Machine $9.99 For their fourth album, 1981’s Ghost in the Machine, the Police had streamlined their sound to focus more on their pop side and less on their trademark reggae-rock. Their jazz influence had become more prominent, as evidenced by the appearance of saxophones on several tracks. The production has more of a contemporary ’80s sound to it (courtesy of Hugh Padgham, who took over for Nigel Gray), and Sting proved once and for all to be a master of the pop songwriting format. The album spawned several hits, such as the energetic “Spirits in the Material World” (notice how the central rhythms are played by synthesizer instead of guitar to mask the reggae connection) and a tribute to those living amid the turmoil and violence in Northern Ireland circa the early ’80s, “Invisible Sun.” But the best and most renowned of the bunch is undoubtedly the blissful “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” which topped the U.K. singles chart and nearly did the same in the U.S. (number three). Unlike the other Police releases, not all of the tracks are stellar (“Hungry for You,” “Omegaman”), but the vicious jazz-rocker “Demolition Man,” the barely containable “Rehumanize Yourself,” and a pair of album-closing ballads (“Secret Journey,” “Darkness”) proved otherwise. While it was not a pop masterpiece, Ghost in the Machine did serve as an important stepping stone between their more direct early work and their more ambitious latter direction, resulting in the trio’s exceptional blockbuster final album, 1983’s Synchronicity. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi |
