The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album

$4.90

At the time of its release, this was the watershed for soundtracks, selling a kazillion copies. It documents Whitney Houston’s character in the Kevin Costner movie, which required Houston to play only herself (although one hopes she wouldn’t end up with someone as smarmy as Costner). The album is as much a testament to the production of Babyface who, through the mid-1990s, actually was the mainstr…

 ...Coals to Newcastle

…Coals to Newcastle

$69.98

When the Scottish pop band Orange Juice split up in January of 1985, it didn? t seem too likely that they would become one of the more influential bands of the era. Yes, their early singles on the tiny Postcard label generated some excitement, and they had a bona fide chart hit with the 1983? s single “Rip It Up,” but their career had mostly come to a sputtering halt outside the lens of the public eye. One short year later, with the rise of C-86 and the early indie pop bands, the brightly scrappy attitude and scruffily melodic sound of early Orange Juice suddenly became popular again. Fast forward to the mid-’90s and Belle & Sebastian, then Franz Ferdinand and more, to see that the Orange Juice legacy lives on as strongly as ever. The songs of Edwyn Collins (and those of James Kirk) have been required listening for a large number of great pop bands. Thanks to the release of 2005? s The Glasgow School, which made all the band? s early recordings widely available for the first time, even more bands were able to draw inspiration from the band and their sound. In 2010, all the band? s recorded output was finally made easily accessible.Put together in part by Edwyn Collins, the box set ? Coals to Newcastle is beautiful to look at, wonderful to listen to, and basically a dream come true for Orange Juice fans who weren? t able to get a hold of the original albums or the Japanese CD reissues. Even if you did own either of those, Coals is still worth seeking out for all the extras. The six-CD/one-DVD set contains all of the band? s recorded output: the early singles, the three studio albums, the Texas Fever EP, a full complement of B-sides, a handful of demos and different mixes, a disc of BBC sessions, two videos, live footage from the Old Grey Whistle Test, and a very ’80s concert video (Dada with the Juice) that the final incarnation of the band made. The Glasgow School is included as the first disc, and it? s still amazing to hear all the singles and demos …

 ...Live in Chicago

…Live in Chicago

$18.98

Two albums in is a little bit quick for a live album from Panic at the Disco, but in a strange way …Live in Chicago comes at a good time for the quartet, as its 2008 album was such a studio-created salute to the Beatles that it raised the question as to whether the band could pull it off on-stage. Turns out, this live set — available as almost any live album is in a CD/DVD package featuring the full set as a CD and a DVD for a home theater — proves that they can, albeit not quite as beguilingly as they do in the confines of the studio. The absurd grandeur of Pretty. Odd is replaced with a nervy but clean energy more reminiscent of their debut, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, with those songs given more of a professional punch than they had on record. So, the young band is still feeling its way, but the surprising thing about …Live in Chicago is that Panic at the Disco sound tight, melodic, and big, capable of filling a large stage. They still could rock just a bit harder, but Pretty. Odd suggests that they’re becoming that rare thing in 2008: a pop-oriented rock band. They might not be doing this knowingly, but the results are entertaining all the same, even on this for-the-fans live set. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

 01011001 [CD/DVD]

01011001 [CD/DVD]

$29.98

With Ayreon, Dutch multi-instrumentalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen has built a career around massive prog metal opuses with hordes of guest vocalists. Basically, anybody in metal who can hold a tune has sung for Ayreon at some point. 01011001 features Anneke Van Giersbergen (ex-the Gathering), Jonas Renkse (Katatonia), Floor Jansen (After Forever), Tom Englund (Evergrey), Hansi K? rsch (Blind Guardian), Simone Simons (Epica), Ty Tabor (King’s X), and Daniel Gildenlow (Pain of Salvation), among many others. These singers are the focal points of their bands, but in Ayreon, they’re merely characters in Lucassen’s rock operas. 01011001 is a sprawling two-disc set that one critic called “the longest CD ever made.” Indeed, the album spans 100 minutes, and feels like 100 years. It’s a perfect fit for the Inside/Out label — pristine production, byzantine songs that feel like full albums, hi-tech synths that wish they were guitars. Lucassen really, really likes his synths; in “Waking Dreams,” he entirely forgoes bass in favor of a percolating ostinato that suggests a beefier Kraftwerk. Electronics also pervade the percussion; “Beneath the Waves” is as if Alan Parsons covered the Beastie Boys’ “So What’cha Want.” Ray gun synths, operatic vocals, fake and real strings, and even Celtic melodies adorn this sonic mansion. Its ambition would be laughable if the record didn’t actually fulfill it often. Admittedly, such fulfillment was purchased at Guitar Center (or its Dutch equivalent); the record is most touching when it strips down to acoustic guitar on the gorgeously compact “Web of Lies.” These two discs, subtitled Planet Y and Earth, are about humanity’s disconnect with itself and destruction of the planet. But that’s really not important. Music this over the top almost defies criticism. Reviewing it is like reviewing the world’s tallest building. It doesn’t care; it just goes on and on. [This edition of 01011001 includes a bonus DVD.] ~ Cosmo Lee, Rovi

 25 & Alive: Boneshaker

25 & Alive: Boneshaker

$19.99

Mot? rhead is one of a kind. A no-nonsense, no-holds-barred rock & roll band — led by legendary vocalist/bassist/songwriter Lemmy Kilmister — who profoundly influenced heavy metal and punk alike. For a thorough overview of Mot? rhead on home video, it’s going to be difficult to top SPV’s 2001 DVD 25 & Alive: Boneshaker. The core of this DVD is Mot? rhead’s 25th anniversary concert held at Brixton Academy in London on October 22, 2000, during the We Are Mot? rhead tour. Lemmy, guitarist “Philthy Animal” Taylor, and drummer Mikkey Dee treat the capacity crowd to a 23-song set. Highlights include “We Are Mot? rhead,” “I’m So Bad (Baby I Don’t Care),” “Overnight Sensation,” the Sex Pistols cover “God Save the Queen,” “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “You Better Run,” “Orgasmatron,” “Going to Brazil,” “Damage Case,” “Bomber,” and “Ace of Spades.” Several surprise guests sit in on a few songs, including Warlock and Doro goddess Doro Pesch and Ugly Kid Joe’s Whitfield Crane on vocals during “Born to Raise Hell,” longtime Mot? rhead guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clarke during “The Chase Is Better Than the Catch,” Lemmy and Philip Anthony Campbell’s sons on guitar during “Killed by Death,” and Clarke, Queen guitarist Brian May, and Skunk Anansie guitarist Ace during the final encore, “Overkill.” But that’s not all. 25 & Alive: Boneshaker is also stuffed with interviews, photos, bandmember biographies, “Sacrifice” and “God Save the Queen” music videos, and a special discography noting rare and obscure Mot? rhead singles and albums from around the world. Musical extras include Lemmy and Campbell performing “Ain’t No Nice Guy” acoustically in a London studio in July 2001, and Mot? rhead ripping through “R.A.M.O.N.E.S.,” “Shoot You in the Back,” “Born to Raise Hell” (with guest vocalist Nina C. Alice of Skew Sisken), and “Ace of Spades” at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany in August 2001. One fully loaded DVD like 25 & Alive is a grea…

 25 Years

25 Years

$149.98

Celebrating a quarter century of Sting: The Solo Artist, the three-CD/one-DVD 2011 box set 25 Years is a handsome retrospective bound in a hardcover book. Some box sets are heavy on rarities, all the better to hook the hardcore, some are designed to be comprehensive but 25 Years follows a different route, choosing to offer a leisurely journey through the past, stopping at all the familiar points on a well-worn path. Not counting the DVD, which contains the final show from Sting? s 2005 Broken Music tour and is heavy on Police material (eight of the ten tracks!), there is nothing unreleased nor is there anything unexpected; some charting singles are missing but they? re the ones that reached the lower rungs of the pop charts or only popped up on rock radio (? Down So Long,? ? Epilogue (Nothing ? Bout Me),? ? Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot? ), and the various stray songs and B-sides weren? t even in the running for inclusion. What Sting, who selected this sequence himself, has chosen to present are the hits — from ? If You Love Somebody Set Them Free? to ? Desert Rose? — supported by album tracks that are concert or fan staples. Not much of a surprise, yet the 45 songs, along with the photo, sketch, and lyric-laden book, do an excellent job of summarizing the spirit of Sting? s years after the Police. If you? re a fan, it? s a classy slice of nostalgia. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

 3 Bats Live [DVD]

3 Bats Live [DVD]

$19.99

Meat Loaf is seen on his concert tour promoting Bat out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose in this video, which chronicles a stop on the tour in an arena in London, Ontario. The basis of the 18-song, two-hour-and-24-minute performance is the three Bat out of Hell albums, the second of which is called Bat out of Hell II: Back Into Hell. The 59-year-old singer seems least animated when running through material from the three-decades-old original Bat out of Hell, notably the opening number (following a snippet of “All Revved Up with No Place to Go”), “Paradise by the Dashboard Light,” the multi-part account of teenage seduction (accompanied by baseball commentary) followed by middle-aged regret, for which he appears on-stage in his late-’70s garb, including a ruffled tuxedo shirt and long-haired wig. Maybe it’s just as well to get that old warhorse out of the way early, although, since it requires a degree of acting from him and duet partner Aspen Miller (decked out in a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader outfit) that neither seem prepared for yet, maybe it should have been held until later in the evening. Meat Loaf warms up somewhat as the show goes on, but he doesn’t speak until he launches into a story to introduce “Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are,” which he describes as his second favorite song that he’s recorded. (His first favorite goes unrevealed.) The story is abruptly cut off, however, after an audience member claims to have heard it before, apparently from the opening act. Thereafter, this is a typical arena rock show, with multi-colored Vari-lites scraping the stage, pyrotechnics going off in the back, and musicians striking poses as they alternate between melodic heavy metal rockers and power ballads, all led by Meat Loaf and his passionate tenor. The Jim Steinman songs that were written for that voice come off best, of course, with the Steinman-lite additions from Bat out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose written by such hac…

 A Christmas Experiment [DVD]

A Christmas Experiment [DVD]

$15.99

The Canadian Brass DVD of A Christmas Experiment was released in 2000. A CD of the same name was released in 1997. The DVD opens with an explanation that what you are about to see is a concert/pageant organized by a “gang” of kids who are friends and relatives of the Canadian Brass. The “experiment” is in letting the kids organize the event (including scripting the tuba player as a “Jack in the Box”!) and it works very well. This is a DVD that young children will enjoy tremendously. There is a sweet quality to the interaction between parent musicians and their kids who describe Chirstmas icons and events in engaging ways. However, A Christmas Experiment is not a full-fledged concert. There are some great songs heard throughout the DVD, including “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer,” “Jolly Old St. Nick,” “Angles We Have Heard on High,” and “Little Dummer Boy,” among others. A Christmas Experiment is fun, charming, and aimed at the very young. This DVD is paced at only 52 minutes, but that might be all a short attention span will give it. Be prepared for kids to want to watch this multiple times. (For just pure music, and more adult fare, track down the audio CD of the same name. It includes about an hour of great Canadian Brass music.) ~ JT Griffith, Rovi

VHS to DVD Computer Programs

There are those of us who want to hold on to our vast VHS collections. However, no matter how well you store them, the degradation that VHS tapes experience is all but assured. If you really want to keep that media, you have to convert them to DVD, a nearly-infinite form of media if it’s stored adequately. With the help of VHS to DVD conversion software and the right computer, you can find a lot of benefits to this method, like the ability to edit down your videos and previewing them before you burn them to DVD.

Your computer will really open up the options you have at your disposal when transferring VHS to DVD, given that you have the right programs. If you want to capture analog video and burn it onto a DVD, your computer needs the following things:

A. Software For Video Editing – Your Video Capture Device will work with this program, as you can easily edit and burn the media afterwards. Depending on the software package you get, you will get far different prices, learning curves, and features.

B. Video Capture Device – Your computer needs to be able to capture your VHS tape’s analog signals and store them digitally for later conversion. A capture device or card is the best way to do this, as you just plug it in and have it convert.

C. DVD Burner – In order to make that DVD, you need a DVD burner so you can export the file from your computer to the DVD player.
For the most part, you might need to take the time to buy each individual thing, but you can find capture device/software bundles on the market.

VHS2DVD Wizard (VHS2DVDWizard.com)

You can run VHS2DVD Wizard on just about any recent Windows OS, and you will get all of the tools you require to start converting. In this bundle, you will get a USB video capture device, an RCA video cable, and the software CD, giving you a one-stop method of getting your videos converted to DVD. If you are nervous around computers, you can find easy to use tutorials that enable you to find all the information necessary to get the job done. Your conversion process will be extremely easy with the help of the software included with this package, and you will be able to edit out all the stuff you don’t want before you finish the DVD burning process. Even if your VHS tape has copy protection, it will copy it for you.

NCH Golden Video

With the help of NCH Golden Video, you will be able to easily convert your VHS video cassettes to a digital format. You can use the simple wizard that enables you to install the program, and you could use the image restoration tools to make your conversion easier. If you have slight degradation in the image quality of your VHS tape, these features can really come in handy. You will also be able to have it automatically stop when the video is over, making the capture process a lot easier. With the help of this software, you do not need a lot of technical skills in order to put titles and menus on your DVD, as well as tweaking effects and changing the audio levels. The software itself has CD/DVD burning applications, making it your one stop shop for VHS conversion and DVD burning.

While you can run this application on any form of Windows OS, you do not get the capture device, so you will have to buy that on your own.

Roxio Easy VHS to DVD

In terms of DVD playback and video/audio software for the home PC, there is no more popular name than Roxio, and a lot of people know the chief products in their line of software. With this Easy VHS to DVD software bundle, you get an easy to use USB video capture device. You can use the Easy VHS to DVD application with any form of Windows, but it takes a while to install the program, and will take a lot of effort. If you are not very knowledgeable about computers, you might have some trouble. With the help of this application, you can also have trouble converting your home videos, as it will often think that they are copy protected and cease to convert.

In the event that this is the bundle that you get, it is recommended that you just keep the USB capture device and throw the disk away, opting instead for a different program that is easier to use.

Honestech VHS to DVD

You will get a USB video capture device with this software bundle, however, so you can hook your camera or VHS to your computer. With this software, you can keep it at beginner mode, or change to advanced level if you want to change things around a bit. From Windows XP to Windows 7, you will find that it is a simple matter to install this capture device.

While there is a video capture device included, be aware that the program will take up a lot of resources, requiring you to have a fairly advanced machine to run it. If you do, though, you can convert Macrovision or copy protected VHS tapes in addition to your home movies.

Summary

You can find quite a few different ways to convert VHS to DVD with the help of your computer, allowing you the freedom to keep your VHS collection for decades to come, playing them instead in a DVD format.

Girlie Show: Live Down Under [Video]

Girlie Show: Live Down Under [Video]

$19.98

The Girlie Show: Live Down Under captures the Sydney, Australia date of Madonna’s theatrical and extravagant Girlie Show from 1993. With crystal clear digital video and sound, the disc delivers dynamic versions of “Holiday,” “Rain,” “Erotica,” “Deeper and Deeper,” and 14 of the Material Girl’s other hits, making it the next best thing to actually being at the show. Though The Girlie Show’s lack of special DVD features is frustrating, it’s still a decent presentation of a spectacular, two-hour concert, and worthwhile for fans looking to upgrade from the laser disc or VHS versions. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

 Grow Live Monsters

Grow Live Monsters

$16.95

Originally in the VHS format from Lobsterland Videos,, this bizarre film makes the translation to DVD splendidly. With some material recorded between 1973 and 1977, the collage of images and exotic sounds is kind of like colorizing an original print of the movie Night of the Living Dead and putting it into a blender with Jerry Goldsmith’s soundtrack to Planet of the Apes. Intentionally made to be hard to describe, there’s an eight-page interview with filmmaker and Destroy All Monsters bandmember Cary Loren, and it is helpful. If ever a compilation DVD needed extensive liner notes, this is it, and MVDVisual smartly puts the instructions on the back of this musical version of a chocolate chip cookie mix. For those who felt the Mentors El Duce Vita too immature and vile, and the Chesterfield Kings’ Where Is The Chesterfield King? a victim of extreme haphazard disarray, the erratic vibrations splashed under these cinematic cuts give new meaning to the term “art for art’s sake.” But they are much more effective than the other two aforementioned DVDs. There’s lots of material to choose from, a “Hometown Horrors” slide show as well as a selection from a three-hour Destroy All Monsters performance in Seattle, WA in 2000. If it is art imitating life, then the band’s embrace of Japanese horror flicks has come home to roost as some of these sounds and visions would please Mothra and Godzilla. Great stuff to play in the background at parties. ~ Joe Viglione, Rovi

In Concert With The Edmonton Symphony

In Concert With The Edmonton Symphony

$11.98

This January 27, 1981, Canadian concert from a 50-years-young Ray Charles was recorded with the Edmonton Symphony, also billed as the ITV Concert Orchestra when they were performing on the ITV television channel. The full band from Alberta became famous to pop fans a decade earlier when in 1971 they accompanied Procol Harum and had a big hit with a remake of Gary Brooker and company’s “Conquistador” from that group’s monster 1972 live release. With the ITV tag disguising them, the Edmonton Symphony got less acclaim for this marvelous effort than they did on the Procol Harum Top Five album. Originally issued in the VHS and laser disc formats by MCA in 1992, this material recorded at the Jubilee Auditorium was conducted by Sid Feller and makes the transition well to DVD. Though short — only 11 titles long with an extended intro/overture — the 47-plus minutes have such fine audio that you can take your eyes off the screen and hear a pretty tremendous on-stage recording by Ray. Only “What’d I Say” is reprised from his 1965 Live in Concert album, though many of his other classics are here, from “Take These Chains from My Heart” to “I Can’t Stop Loving You.” With seven camera people on the job, director John Blanchard skillfully fades the motion of the string players into the face of Charles, with multiple images of the singer performing “Georgia on My Mind” in this classy setting. Five Raelettes add their charm and backing vocals — wonderfully choreographed for the cover of Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now.” No DVD bonus material, but a fine presentation nonetheless. ~ Joe Viglione, Rovi

 Legend [DVD]

Legend [DVD]

$19.99

Assembled seven years after the release of its audio complement, the VHS home video Legend presents visual versions of most of the songs contained on the 1984 audio album. Since the original LP was basically a collection of Bob Marley’s biggest U.K. hit singles, it’s not surprising that there are music videos of most of those same songs, which were no doubt produced by Island Records to promote those singles. Six of the 13 songs were filmed live at the Rainbow Theatre in London in June 1977, but even these performances have had other material added, including footage of Marley & the Wailers in casual circumstances and street scenes from Jamaica. Snippets of Marley interviews appear in between the clips. “Is This Love” is a full-fledged music video that finds Marley at a children’s party, while “Stir It Up” is a TV performance from the U.K. show The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1973 featuring the original Wailers band with Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston. There are also videos obviously assembled after Marley’s death, such as “Buffalo Soldier,” which features a group of Rastas decked out in Civil War uniforms roaming around in the woods, and “One Love/People Get Ready,” in which a dreadlocked child watches various celebrities, including Paul McCartney, miming the song on TV. As was true of the Legend LP, this collection is not a true Marley best-of; it contains too many later songs and not enough early ones. But Marley was a charismatic live performer, and the segments of his concerts included demonstrate that well. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

 Somewhere [Video/DVD]

Somewhere [Video/DVD]

$15.99

Pet Shop Boys’ Somewhere presents a documentary with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, as well as a 1997 performance at the Savoy Theatre in support of their acclaimed album Bilingual. While Tennant and Lowe’s friendly bickering during their interviews is amusing and the performances of songs like “Yesterday When I Was Mad,” “Can You Forgive Her?,” “Se a Vida E,” and the cover of David Bowie’s “Hallo Spaceboy” show Pet Shop Boys in fine form, the disc’s sound and picture quality are not markedly better than that of the VHS version. The lack of extra features will also disappoint hardcore fans expecting more from the DVD version of Somewhere, but the disc may be worthwhile for those who don’t already own the videotape. Overall, Somewhere isn’t as necessary or interesting as the group’s Performance concert video or Videography, but it’s still a decent DVD debut for Pet Shop Boys. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

$24.98

The soundtrack to a VHS cassette of Christine Alicino’s “video paintings” (which can be viewed properly only when the monitor is stood on its side), Thursday Afternoon is an hour-long, uninterrupted ambient piece created in Eno’s “holographic” compositional style, in which even the most brief snippet of music is representative of the performance as a whole. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

USED: Corporate Ghost: The Videos 1990-2002

$8.95

In one of the many commentaries included in the Sonic Youth DVD Corporate Ghost: The Videos – 1990-2002, group member Thurston Moore notes that he is becoming more interested in videos than in music, a fair statement given the band’s previous efforts, many of which are included here. In fact, the disc begins with the entire Goo video, previously released on VHS, music videos of all 11 songs from the 1990 album. The remaining 12 videos in the main part of the DVD include selections from all of the group’s subsequent albums up through 2002’s Murray Street, plus “Superstar” from the Carpenters tribute album If I Were a Carpenter. The videos take up an hour and three-quarters, but that’s only the beginning of the material, since nearly all of the videos also have commentaries, usually by the band, along with others by the directors and in some cases the actors. “100%” from 1992’s Dirty has four commentaries, one by the band, one by director Tamra Davis, one by musician and friend Mike Watt, who has a cameo in the video, and one by actor Jason Lee, who made his onscreen debut in the video, having been hired as a skateboarder. There is also a generous helping of bonus material in the form of extra videos such as “Drunken Butterfly” and “Swimsuit Issue,” more interview material, and even a self-made video by a teenage fan painting her bedroom wall to look like the cover of Goo! Although a few of these videos got played on the old MTV show 120 Minutes, and there is much discussion of what MTV liked and didn’t like, the videos for the most part are not typical MTV fare, just as Sonic Youth is not a typical MTV band. The group sought out young and adventurous directors and usually gave them very little money. Sometimes, bandmembers made the videos themselves. “Superstar” was shot for a sum well into five figures, but Moore estimates that “The Empty Page” from Murray Street cost him about 100 dollars. So, the production values are typically not what you see on c…

USED: Girlie Show: Live Down Under [Video]

$8.99

Revelator is the long-awaited, song-oriented debut album by the husband-wife team of singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi and guitarist Derek Trucks. 10,000 Days

$10.47

With a majority of the songs on 10,000 Days clocking in well past the seven-minute mark, you wouldn’t be entirely mistaken in thinking that the title of the album refers to how long it actually takes to make it through the whole thing. Two of the tracks–the sitar and tabla enhanced “10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)” and its suitably epic psych-rock sister “Rosetta Stoned”–even linger on for nearly a d…

Disney loved to mix live action with animation (Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks), but this 1977 effort falls on its face. The turn-of-the-century story concerns an orphaned boy whose only friend is a cartoon monster. While the latter is entertainingly rendered, the rest of the film strains to be enchanting and the cast overreaches in a big way. Not for anybody over the age of ten. –Tom Keo…

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (A Walt Disney Masterpiece) [VHS]

The misconception about this animated film from Disney was that it was a movie for kids–something Victor Hugo never had in mind. In fact, despite a cute brace of singing gargoyles who are Quasimodo’s (Tom Hulce) best friends, this version of Hugo’s classic tale is really adult entertainment, with a strong set of songs by Alan Menken. The story remains mostly the same (though tricked out with a ha…
