Begin $22.99 The Millennium’s Begin can truly be described as a bona fide lost classic. The brainchild of producers Curt Boettcher and Gary Usher, the group was formed out of the remnants of their previous studio project, Sagittarius, which was preceded by yet another aggregation, the Ballroom. On Begin, hard rock, breezy ballads, and psychedelia all merge into an absolutely air-tight concept album, easily on the level of other, more widely popular albums from the era such as The Notorious Byrd Brothers, which share not only Usher’s production skills, but similarities in concept and construction. The songwriting, mostly by Joey Stec and Curt Boettcher, is sterling and innovative, never straying into the type of psychedelic overindulgence which marred so many records from this era. For example, “It’s You,” by Stec, is as powerful and fully realized as the era ever produced, easily on par with songs by the Beach Boys and the Byrds — and, yes, even the Beatles. At the time the most expensive album Columbia ever produced (and it sounds like it), Begin is an absolute necessity for any fan of late-’60s psychedelia and a wonderful rediscovery that sounds as vital today as it did the day it was released. [Disc three of the 2001 Sundazed three-CD release Magic Time: The Millennium/Ballroom Recordings includes everything from the Begin album, as well as the unreleased "Blight"/"Just About the Same" single that was added to the 1990 Begin reissue, and the single versions of "It's You," "I Just Want to Be Your Friend," "5 A.M.," "Prelude," "To Claudia on Thursday," and "There Is Nothing More to Say." Belonging $17.98 On Keith Jarrett’s first recording with his “European” quartet — Jan Garbarek (sax), Palle Danielsson (bass), Jon Christensen (drums) — he stakes out somewhat less abrasive territory than that which his “American” foursome was exploring at this time. Garbarek sports a neutral, vibratoless tone that occasionally reaches an emotional climax; the rhythm section is supportive and just loose enough. The record operates at its strongest level when Jarrett locks the quartet into his winning gospel mode on “‘Long as You Know You’re Living Yours” and the tense drive of “Spiral Dance”; the reflective numbers are less compelling. Still, this LP-turned-CD successfully bucked the powerful electric trends of its time and holds up well today. ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

Best of Charley Patton $17.98 Were Charley Patton alive today, he’d most likely be pleasantly surprised by the durability of his records. Who could’ve imagined that the musings of a Delta guitarist, recorded for Paramount in the late 1920s and early 1930s, would be treated as relics of art 60 and 70 years later? The Best of Charley Patton includes 23 cuts, 70 minutes of music, and offers an excellent introduction to those not quite ready to spend the big bucks on the available box sets. There’s “High Sheriff Blues,” a song recalling Patton’s arrest in Belzoni, Mississippi for drunkenness, and “Pony Blues,” his signature song that dated back to the beginning of his career in 1910. He’s joined by fiddler Henry “Son” Sims on “Going to Move to Alabama,” and plays some mean bottleneck guitar on “Mississippi Bo Weavil.” Yazoo reserved a paragraph of the liner notes to address the problems of transferring Patton’s music from worn-out 78s. A certain level of noise, it seems, is a fact of life with these recordings. Yazoo achieves a balance here, cutting down as much surface noise as possible without sapping the dynamics of the performance. The cleanest cuts comprise the first half of the album and two cuts, “High Sheriff” and “Jersey Bull,” appear at their proper speed for the first time on this collection. Born to Freedom $30 The premise of this musical is that young people today understandably cannot feel the same connection between their lives and that of Martin Luther King, Jr. as do older generations, who remember him as a contemporary. The writers of Born to Freedom have created a meaningful, yet wonderfully entertaining, musical to provide this connection.
